The Ganges is all that and more, and needs to be experienced, not described. It is worth getting up before dawn to get a boat and observe the early morning goings on.

A majestic river running right next to Varanasi. We walked alongside and went on a slow boat. We watched a cremation and enjoyed the style of buildings on the banks. A super wide, quick flowing river. A life blood of many.

My tour to the Ganges was shortened due to the high water level at this time of monsoon. Unfortunately, no boat trips were allowed. People stayed near the water on the ghats, took a dip and meditated. Very colorful and memorable. Also dirty! Very crowded,...More

Yes, indeed, there are no end of people selling orange water bottles, but remember the Ganga doesn't need to be in your possession, it just needs to be there in your head and soul.
