Boating was exhilarating in this lake and staying in a houseboat is a unique experience. The place is lined with coconut palms and the lake is a host to many migratory birds. The lake needs to be cleaned of plastic garbage which mars the beauty of the place.

Vembanad lake Our trip to Vembanad lake was a unique experience, on 17.10. 2022, we reached Kumarakom and took a motor boat to explore this lake , 2400 sq km, approximately. It was large, and the sunshine sparkling on water body , with water birds like cormorant, kingfisher etc resting for a catch from water .

We have just stayed on a houseboat for three nights cruising Vembanad Lake in Kerala - what a lovely experience! It was "Spice Routes" houseboat "Cinnamon" - staffed by a crew of three who were extremely professional and friendly. The chef excelled himself and all the food was absolutely delicious. The en-suite accommodation was clean and comfortable and the all important air conditioning worked very well. The lake is a paradise for bird watchers - so many to see and life on the shores of the lake as we were gliding by was fascinating. We also had a trip on a Shakara boat which enabled us to visit the smaller backwaters which was equally fascinating. Would definitely recommend.

Viewing and travelling in a house boat in the Vembanad Lake offers an excellent experience. This large lake adjoining the Kumarakom resort village offers an exquisite holiday experience in Kerala. The gentle breeze while boating add an additional bonus apart from the water view around. The house boat meal with the popular Karimeen fish is a must to do to complete the feel.

Visiting this lake and the backwaters in Kerala was on my bucket list for a long time and finally managed to do it on the 2nd of March 2024 while staying at the Taj Kumarakom when we took a private boat ride for almost 4 hours from the resort to Allepy watching the awesome sights floating on the backwaters watching nature in all its glory. Now a bit about this lake : Vembanad is the longest lake in India,as well as the largest in the state of Kerala. The lake has an area of 230 square kilometers and a maximum length of 96.5 km.Spanning several districts in the state of Kerala, it is known as Vembanadu Lake. Personally reminded me of the Nile Cruise in Egypt 🇪🇬 when we had gone there for 3 nights from Aswan to Luxor in Egypt 🇪🇬 . While floating on the Vembanand lake, we were told that there are around 2,000 boats that float on these backwaters in Kerala. Having watched the travel channels and finally doing this was a dream come true especially for a travel enthusiast like me !

the boats are spacious, clean, elegant and some have a wonderful upstairs day bed from which to watch the backwaters drift past. Sitting outside the weather is pleasant with a slight breeze, but after dark, when you're moored up the mozzies descend.
We discovered you had to ask for the air-con in the room to be turned on at 7 o'clock in the evening, the cabins get very hot during the day, and ditto with the hot water.
The food was very good and there's a fair choice. The boats are dry so it is advisable if you want a beer or wine to take it with you, they will put it in the fridge.
well worth going.

We did boating in huge Vembanad Lake which is endless as well as in Alleppey canals. If you are short of time, I would advice backwater boating in the canals of Alleppey as its much more relaxing, scenic and you get a chance to see the lifestyle of people staying in small villages near to canals.

One should enjoy the cruising onboard houseboat or canoe in this peaceful lake the . We had great oppurtunity to capture awesome pics of the mesmerizing backwaters. The sunset is awesome when you cruise on Kumarakom area of the lake. There were some huge flocks of migratory birds and darters flying along with our boat for a while. We thoroughly enjoyed our time we spend on the Vembanad Lake. One suggestion is to take morning slot or after noon slot for cruising.

Even though I am from Kerala, have never had a chance to go on a boat trip on this famous lake.
It was just amazing ! The boat trip on this lake is a never miss for anyone on a trip to Kerala. The boat trips are easy to arrange and there are trips that suits everyone. There are big boats for big groups and small boats for small families.
The boats are normally rented out on an hourly basis. The most common trips are 4-5 hours and the overnight stay on the houseboat.
The quality of the food depends on the boat you select. These are operated by local people and the cuisine is normally very local and authentic !

Hi....Would you please share where did your houseboat trip start and end?
Also, what is your advise regarding incorporating a day or two in Kochi/Cochin?
Are there any beach options near by that can be experienced?
Thanks a ton!
