Overview
More
Cartagena was always a desirable conquest for pirates and enemies of the Spanish Crown; and for this reason, the defense of the city from these threats was a question of priority for its inhabitants from the first decades of the existence of the city. Once the primitive nucleus of Cartagena and the outlying district of Getsemani were fortified, there was a need to erect a structure on San Lazaro Hill that would prevent an enemy attack from its peak, since the hill dominated the walls and the only entrance to the city, the Media Luna Entrance in Getsemani. In addition, this hill was the intermediate point between the city and the nearby Popa Peak, where some heavy guns and canons were installed between 1769 and 1780 to cross fire with the castle and make an enemy attack more difficult from the large beach of Playon Grande in Pie de la Popa.

We did a tour to this place with a guide. The place is not a castle like the name states, it’s a fort. It was one of he strategists places of defense back in the day. Ticket price is 25.000 COP about 9 US dollar....More

If the architecture and the historical significance don’t tempt you then maybe the instagram and snapchatable views will! To put it simply, the castle is a must see while in Cartagena don’t leave without seeing it! I promise you won’t regret it.

We arrived at the castle (which is actually more of a fortress than a castle) shortly after it opened at 8am on a Wednesday. It was not crowded at all at that time. Our group included children, ages 3 and 5, as well as adults...More

It's a hard walk up, loads of sun and people trying to sell you all they can on the way. But the view is breathtaking! Not to mention the historical aspect of the visit.

Audio guides are available, but I was a little confused by the map that lets you know which number to press. There are no numbers in the Castilo to let you know what you should listen to. However, don't let this stop you. The views...More

Extremely interesting tour. A bit tiring, due to the heat. Nothing a hat, bermudas, sandals and a bottle of water not solve....

It costs 25000 to get in which gives you access around the whole Fort. There is a little film inside which is very interesting and tells you about the history of the fort. There isnt much to do other than that as a lot of...More

First, you can buy water at the very top of the fort. Don’t believe street level vendors they are the only water. Second, drinking water a must! The hot humid conditions will sap you fast if you don’t have water. Third, Fort is nice however...More

It's a climb up there but well worth it to see the view of the city and water. Learn about the history and appreciate what was from many years ago.

It's a beautiful building just behind the Ciudad amurallada, from there you have amazing views. Guided tours are the best option.

It will depend on the kind of disability. If you can walk up hill slowly, you will get to the most interesting site, with good views of the city. You will probably miss the tunnels, which are not so great anyway. The view... More
