I have to say that this was nicest of the water towns I visited on my trip. Compared to Tonglizhen and Mudu it did not have any crowds and it was very easy to navigate with a number of interesting museums!
Not very crowded when we were there with a small group. Popular with the Chinese. A little hokey as it's' quite touristy but it's worth a visit. There is a soy museum there that is interesting. Fun just to walk around, but wouldn't be if...More
enjoyed walking through Luzhi town ourely because it kept its traditional charm and is not as commerciallised as Suzhou, Tongli or Zhuangguang. Not that all of the others have their special charm, but Luzhi is just sweet and charming, not perfect. It is friendly and...More
High speed train from Shanghai's Hongqiao railway station to Suzhou takes 30ish minutes and cost 40ish yuan (2nd class).

One of the most picturesque water town around Shanghai. Not (yet) fully commercialized. Not (yet) overcrowded, even on weekends. Especially the small roads in the "2nd row" give an impression of the historic place. No entrance fee into the town, but only to some museums,...More
Luzhi is super easy to get to from Suzhou. (Just take subway line 1 and get off at the terminus (Zhongnan Street Station). Take bus no. 528 from Exit 1 and get off at Xiaoshi Road.) Maybe because of this it's quite touristy with lots...More

Tickets were purchased at 78 RMB which provides access to 7 - 9 other attractions in the town. When I was there, the 2 attractions were closed foir renovation which was a letdown. The attractions were not...More
We like to avoid the usual tourist route, so I was happy to learn about Luzhi and to go through the trouble to get there. Because it’s off the tourist route, you have to find your way there. It’s not out of the way, but...More

Unfortunately, I did not have the time to visit other water towns. But I do recommend travelers to try out other water towns which might be nearer for them as Luzhi water town was really out of the way for me as I stayed at Pan Pacific.
Have a good trip to Suzhou though!
