OK so first of all entry is not expensive at 35 RMB for an adult. The issue is the quality of the enclosures. First up clearly there has not been that much investment in the place over recent years, the enclosures are tired looking and there is quite a bit of litter that has clearly been left in the larger enclosures for many months at least. Some of the spaces the animals have are excellent, honestly really impressive, but on the flip of that there are some that are truly disturbing, there's not any middle ground. There is a pride of lions in a very large open enclosure that you walk on a very large bridge to see, but there is also a single lion in a cage in another section of the park and that cage is about 10m by 5m and is just a concrete floor, that's it. This is not a quarantine pen, there's a tiger a couple of doors up in similar surroundings, also monkeys a little further on, whilst at the other end of the park llama, emus and a few others fair poorly too. It seems that around the outside of the zoo, animals are kept in poor conditions but those in the middle of the zoo do well (in terms of space). It's the old glass half full, half empty conundrum. I just hope that some more money goes in and things are improved, as my abiding memory is of the poor conditions not the good ones.

Oh and before you think this is a cheap day out, it is, if you don't take kids. If you take kids they will discover the "fun fair" rides near the entrance, and these are very far from being cheap. I am form the UK and I would suggest the prices for these rather dilapidated rides would make our own travelling community blush.

This zoo has some of the biggest cages I’ve seen. The bridge going over the lions, Tigers, bears, and wolves is very unique. You could spend many hours here.

This is an amazingly fun zoo to hang out! It's a big far from the centre of the city, but it's a good place to stay. There are many pelicans and flamingo like birds there. Along side with tigers, lions locked in a cage of course. There's also an aquarium in the distance too. All are good to watch. May 2015

Ive got to say that this zoo surprised me. There was a lot of variety of animals from all over the world. And it is well spaced so many of the animals had more "land" to wander, than just a small cage. But there were a few animals whose health I questioned (a lion looked skin and bones and didn't move) and many of the locals were actually throwing candy into the habitats and enclosures of monkeys, bears, and other animals. That made me very sad.

The Hefei Zoo has and amazing world class animal and people environment now.
Resting at the base of DaShu Shan, the zoo grounds are vast and relaxing.

The animals seemed to be well cared for and have a diverse range of species to view and wonder over.

A small zoo when compared to others with in China or Asia Pacific. The entry cost is low and reasonable given the size. Easily this can be completed in a few hours. Like many zoos within China, the animal pens are open and garbage is thrown into them by visiting Chinese people hoping to get the animals to react. There are a few really cool exhibits here like the kangaroos and the Japanese monkeys. Easy to walk around the zoo and not many stairs. Food and drinks are available for sale within the park but as mentioned earlier much is thrown into the animal enclosures. There are some monkeys that are fed regularly by the chinese tourists so they are reaching out to collect more food thrown by the people visiting.

Besides this common occurrence at all zoos in China, the park holds some unique animals and it is worth the few hours it takes to walk through the park.

While Hefei Wildlife park is a 25 RMB taxi ride from the centre of town it is well worth the effort. As of writing, entrance is 35 RMB for adults and you get the opportunity to see some great animals. A highlight is the giant panda, it would be difficult to get much closer to one without going somewhere like Chengdu. Red pandas and lemurs were also great to see. Some of the cages are old and depressing, but it is clear that work is being done to give the animals more freedom and space. The bridge overlooking the park currently does not (yet) take you over many animals but the views of the surrounding area are spectacular. A walk up Dashu Shan or a trip to the local temple would make this into a full but fun day out.

Fun place for kids and grown ups. The panda is super cute, keeps munching bamboo branches. Sea lion show is excellent. Takes place every 30 minutes.

You can touch and stand next to some of the animals in the zoo, which I guess is the reason why it's called the wild-life zoo. It has most of the common animals and is pretty nice. The most important part is the panda garden, where there is a giant panda in it. Try to visit the zoo in the morning/later afternoon of the summer so the panda will come out and play, otherwise you'll see it swimming in its air conditioned room. I would recommend this room if you want to see what animals China has and also the panda. Good for family, friends, couples or just sight-seeing. The price is $6 (RMB 35).
