Awesome history from before prehistoric man up to modern periods. Anhui hasn't impressed me until I realized this has been a population center since human history began! I ran out of time to explore and will definitely return because I need to spend some time in Hefei

Yes, there are 2 museums, the original one is in the Luyang distrust and is the one I went to; the new one is near Swan Lake I believe.
I enjoyed this museum, they take their museums seriously here and it is famous in China and there are displays showing visits by Deng Xiaoping, many CPC luminaries, Zhou Enlai and the Great Helmsman himself. Those displays were fascinating for me as a history buff,
On the ground floor is an extensive history of the CPC in Anhui province, covering its formation, part in the rise of the CPC, the war against the Japanese and the civil war with the Kuomintang. It is covered meticulously and chronologically with great displays, maps, video and even interactive terminals. It does descend into flowery propaganda at times but that's the Chinese way.
There is the usual ceramics exhibit which is not my interest but I found the display on the modernizing of China as reflected in everyday life, to be really well done: such as the hairdressing salon, rooms in a house, a schoolroom and the rise of consumer goods displays. Panda and Huangshan brand early TV sets!
The main reason to visit this original museum would be for history buffs. There is enough English to bridge the language gap, no need for a guide really.
Admission is free and they will store your bag if you wish

A group can book a guided tour of the museum in English. It's fascinating and well worth it. This is the kind of museum that tells a story rather than just labelling stuff in cases.

Nice dinosaurs in one building. The other has rather too many paintings from the revolutionary era. But if you are into history, this is the place in Hefei.

The building is quite new and nicely designed (except a couple of inconvenient blocked foot paths because of changing exhibits). In general it's about on par with most other Provincial museums in China--regional history, pottery, coins, calligraphy, etc.
BUT
The architecture exhibits on the fourth floor are fascinating! I can't remember which number (1-4), but one of them in particular just blew me away. It had tons of examples of absolutely beautiful decorative residential artifacts like doorways, window screens, and furniture. Some of them are incredibly detailed and have a really neat slanted 3D effect. I spent 45 minutes just in that one little exhibit.
P.S. Free but technically need to show ID to enter. I don't feel like it's necessary for the guard at the door to have my passport number so I just showed him my US driver's license, he was confused and asked another employee standing by what to do, and they just waved me in.

5 floors all together isn't that small. Although most of the artifacts and exhibitions were a bit outdated, I still liked that dinosaur/mammoth fossil at the entrance, very reminicent of the British Museum. Overall, I truly enjoyed the exhibitions. Not to mention the real authentic porcelain, pottery, and calligraphy arts. Was there in July 2015.

I visited this museum located in the main commercial area of this city, I also knew that a new and big museum located in rural area. As for this old museum, here are nothing to see, and I have nothing to remember what did I see.
