If you are passing then this feature provides the opportunity to get off of the highway for a brief stop.

Nearly the most surreal man-made thing I saw during my tour of Chile (second only to the Moai on Rapa Nui). It's huge! And it comes up out of the ground, in the middle of nowhere!
Definitely get there if you're in the area, or coming back from a VLT tour. Luckily there was no graffiti when we visited (Oct 19, 2019) and got some amazing drone shots.

The Hand in the Desert or Mano del Desierto is what some refer to as an “Instagram haven” for the adventurous world traveler. The famous sculpture is a large-scale sculpture of a nearly 37 foot-high human hand in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. The Atacama Desert is the driest non-polar desert on the planet, making it the perfect place for such a sculpture.

We were in Antofagasta for work and had an extra free day. We heard about “Hand of the Desert” and thought that we should see it since there seemed nothing much to do here. We were lucky to find Ruhiscos Travel. Maglio from Ruhiscos was our tour guide. He picked us up from our hotel in a comfortable van, and dropped us back at the end of the tour. We bought a half-day tour to see Hand of the Desert, but the tour included visits to the other top 3 popular tourist attractions of Antofagasta which are the Tropic of Capricorn monument, La Portada, and the National Historical Monument Huanchaca. At each place, Maglio provided detailed, interesting commentary. We impressed with a big hand sculpture popping up in the middle of the desert, a must-see site for visitors. But we also liked our visit to La Portada, the sea rock formation in the ocean. We also learned a lot about the history of Antofagasta and Chile at the Huanchaca museum. This tour covered high spots in Antofagasta and let us see the other side of Antofagasta besides the beautiful ocean. Maglio can provide tours in both Spanish and English. We highly recommended Ruhiscos for your Antofagasta tour.

There are good brown signs to bring you to this place.
You can see the art from the highway.

We went here for sunset! Booked an Uber to take us. It was quite pricey but well worth the ride! The hand is huge and looks amazing with the sunset sky. We did some cool photos! Would definitely recommend :))

It was a tough place to go to, but it was definitely worth it!
To go there, I advise you to directly ask a taxi (you will find a lot of them at the bus station), as tours need to be booked for several people, in advance, and it costs more than the taxis.

The taxi cost me about 100 euros, and even if this seems expensive, I am very happy to have done it, as it stayed as one of the most memorable memories of my trip to South America.

You wouldn’t expect to see something like this emerge in the desert during an otherwise quite boring drive along the Antofagasta to Santiago motorway. It’s a fun stop to take great photos. We took a taxi as no other public transport options were available.

In the middle of the desser, a hand emerges. The best is to seeit at the sunset.

The artist is the sculptor Mario Irarrazabal.

>This is a marvelous piece of Art located in the dry desert of Antofagasta

>The size of the hand is very impressive and has been well sculptured by the artist Mario Irarrázabal

>Unlike many other statues, this one gives a very strange impression such as indian civilations yet very attractive

>You need to be there by 10am to make most of the front of the hand (check picture)
If you want pictures in the palm, head there in the afternoon

I highly recommend this place to solo travellers as this is one of the most iconic and original statues in the whole world
