We went to the Sanctuary in January, which is dry season. Getting to the sanctuary involves a long drive from Siem Reap to a somewhat challenging "port" on a canal, a boat trip across Lake Tonle Sap, and up a river to a floating village,...More
We hired the tour and began the tortuous ride to the nearby floating village with super-guide Mr. Sam Mony. A larger flat-bottomed boat carried us through the canal/grasslands/swamp to a smaller floating village. We changed to a small long-tailed boat... and cruised the grasslands to...More
We spent a day birding at the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary and Reserve in December, which is the start of the dry season, after making arrangements by email with the Sam Veasna Center for Wildlife Conservation. I've included the Center's web address. Our guide, who...More
We travelled in October, when the Mekong is in full flow, and the Tonle Sap lake is in full flood. This means that the birds have far more territory to spread out over, and the diversity is not as compelling if you are a serious...More
As part of my 4 night trip on the Aqua Mekong River Boat from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh we went to the Prek Toal bird sanctuary on skiffs from the river boat. The birds were in full array, everything from Storks to small birds....More
This tour with Mr. Hoksan was a great addition to our Cambodian vacation. He was a very welcoming, friendly and informative guide. The day was long and a lot of travel was involved, but you see birds and floating villages along the way. I will...More

I am sure you can. The trip is basically a bus ride to the canal leading to the lake; hire a boat; park entrance cost only if you actually go into the sanctuary itself. If the water is low on the lake this is a good idea, since the birds will be more concentrated in the sanctuary. If the lake is flooded, then the birds spread out. Try Sam Veasna centre; from memory they had a very reasonable tour and they are a conservation company.
