People like me who enjoy seeing how people lived, history and architecture/home interiors would enjoy this tour. The original wood work is still displayed and the bedding was hand sewn by local societies.

After an major disappointing visit at another historic home we almost skipped the Hormel Historic Home. We are very glad we didn't. No herding tour groups that are too large to hear the guide and see the area the guide is describing as this tour is totally self guided. There is a minimum $3.00 fee per person. Once the fee is paid a staff member gets you started on your self guided tour. You are able to spend as much to little time in the house as you like. There is a small booklet that tells you about each room. The woodwork in the downstairs is great. Look up in the dining room! We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the house on our own, staff was available, in their office, to answer any questions.
The garden was in full bloom and lovely.

This was my 3rd stop in catching the highlights of Austin following a stop at the new SPAM Museum and the historical society. This stop surprised me. The first two disappointed me. The house was alive with a toddler music class clearly showing that families utilize the space. It is not a hands off place. Children are welcome and have their own part of the tour. After our visit I looked it up on Facebook and found that the Hormel House offers a lot of children's programming, outreach and special events. Definitely worth stopping at.

I've been to two weddings at the Hormel Historic Home now and both were festive and elegant occasions. The home is well maintained and it's fun to feel yourself stepping back in time and imagining what it would have been like to have lived in a beautiful home like this. They've added on a full kitchen and dining area with a dance floor and they did this in a tasteful manor that compliments the home. The grounds outside in the summer are beautifully maintained as well.

Thank you for the wonderful review! I am honored to hear that you were thoroughly impressed with the Hormel Historic Home! I look forward to sharing your review with our board members, staff and volunteers.
I invite you to visit again the next time you're near Austin as we have new exhibits on display including artwork by George A. Hormel's sister, Lizzie, and artifacts on loan and donated from members of the Hormel family. Our early 1900's kitchen restoration has also recently opened to the public!
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience! We hope you plan another visit one day soon!

Definitely recommend the HORMEL HISTORIC HOME as your venue for your next event!
The home is stunning and very charming. The wedding coordinator (Amanda) was very helpful. Our daughter resides in Austin and Amanda was very accommodating as we were planning and make arrangements from Utah. The wedding was held in November and everything took place at the Hormel Historic Home (rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception and gift opening). The pricing for the event was worth every penny and our daughter was delighted with how things came together! Catering through Hy-Vee is also recommended - the food was of great quality and very affordable.

We found this historic home a beautiful place to host a function. It was very clean and well decorated. The grounds are lovely.
The employees are very nice and we just thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The food was great. If we lived in the area I would not hesitate to book the historic home for a function.

Only a few blocks from the SPAM museum you can see the home of the Hormel's. Worth while stop to see the craftsmanship of time gone by. The house show how they lived not as high on the hog (pun) as some lived in east.

We had just been to the Spam museum (blocks away) and learned of the Spam creator - George Hormel - and his family living in this home. The staff there are friendly, helpful and were able to answer all questions I had about the home. It is absolutely beautiful and worth the $5 to tour through it. They also use the home for summer concerts and for kids camps.
