Within walking distance of the Spam museum, the Hormel home is lovely. A guided tour will walk you through the home, with information on the home, family and business.

While staying in Clear Lake, Iowa during (a chilly) Spring Break, we quickly realized we needed to dig deeper into unique local and day-trip-distance activities. We found the Spam Museum (“Really, honey... we’re going to the WHAT museum?”) to be surprisingly interesting, historically relevant, and very professionally bright and engaging, so it made sense to us to continue our thematic afternoon by visiting the Hormel Home. Although we arrived after tour hours, we were greeted by a friendly, helpful docent, who was very accommodating. The entire house was a a big “wow” to my my history-loving eyes, but for us, the experience was made very special when our 18 year old daughter (an experienced pianist) was allowed to play their fully restored 1914 Mason & Hamlin piano! This generous gesture made our entire trip to Austin, Minnesota memorable!

Visit here before/after the SPAM Musuem! Great double feature!

Self-guided tour is $5. The receptionist will start you out on the right foot with a suggested path to walk around the house (also laid out in the brochure this way) but do as you like. I was lucky to be the only one exploring when I went, so running into people was of zero concern.

This home is ridiculously beautiful. Many of the furnishings are left in the home so you do get an idea of what it might've been like to live there. I love old victorian type of homes like this, so incredible to see and read about all the history.

Worth a small detour to come to Austin for SPAM related fun.

We visited the Hormel Historic House after a visit to the Spam museum, which is within walking distance.

The staff was friendly and answered any questions we had.

The home was nice to walk through. It’s not big so doesn’t take too long. There was a $5 entrance fee.

The young lady that spoke about the history of the house was so friendly. It is a self tour with guide to each room. The event area can host various venues. The Peace Garden is lovely. Great place for weddings and/or receptions.

My nephews wedding was at the event center attached to the Hormel House so we were able to tour the home since they used the house to get ready for the wedding. What a beautifully restored and cared for historic house. The house is set up well for taking a self tour with a lot of information and photos in each room.
I definitely recommend a tour of this home.

The Hormel Historic Home is 4 blocks away from the SPAM museum so my brother and I decided to walk over and see it. Certainly not as fancy nor as large as many historic homes, but well preserved. It's a self-guided tour, using a pamphlet combined with signage in each room. I appreciated that they provided activities for children in each room to keep smaller kids occupied for a few minutes while their parents could look around.
Touching was permitted which is very unusual at historic sites, though a few items were off-limits and breakable items were in cabinets with glass doors.
Many original features of the house are still there, such as woodwork. flooring, windows, and some furniture.
This is a worthwhile stop for people interested in US history and architecture.
