- Patrick GMarina del Rey, California14 contributionsWorth visiting anytime of day, not just sunsetQuite the hike but worth it. Several curious Buddhist statures along the way. Some crowds around sunset yet was still able to get some panoramic views at the top. Don't necessarily have to go at sunset to get some impressive pictures. Better to visit here than the Royal "Palace" if time is short.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 25, 2023
- Meyung RHua Hin, Thailand209 contributionsA once in a lifetime chance! As a lifelong cloud chaser, I am delighted to report that yes, I saw a dragon spouting over the first sun rays at Mount Phousi a few days ago as sown in my photo. I climbed and felt all of the 328 steps in my bones, but the reward was priceless!! It so happened on the very birthday of my late father. He definitely looked down on me at that fleeting moment! Glory to the God of All Things!Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 12, 2023
- Jeremy P192 contributionsWorth going to; great views, but lots of people in a very tight space. It’s definitely worth doing, once! There are 2 main routes to/from. You can enter / exit on the main avenue in town, across from the museum, or you can enter / exit by the Namkhan River. The River choice is far-less crowded, so I went up that way, and exited to the downtown side. The views from the top are terrific, but it gets super-crowded, and very noisy, even by 10 AM. There’s not a lot of space at the summit platform, so if you are claustrophobic, know that in advance. If I went again, I would probably go about 8 AM, to avoid the crowds.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 24, 2023
- Lori MCalifornia2,003 contributionsdon't miss it at sunset!!!so fun! went at sunset and got great pics and views. loved the stairs up - not so great going down as there is no railing or light. use your phone's flashlight. lots of gorgeous sculptures along the way. pretty crowded up there but it was still really great!Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 10, 2024
- Viet Exquisite TravelHanoi, Vietnam194 contributionsNice panoramic view of Luang Prabang beyond the crowded! The steps are easy to climb, we just spent about twenty minutes hiking, with only a few breaks along the way. However, because there are no elevators, it might not be possible for people with disabilities or older people or children to climb up the hill. Behind the steps, there is a small temple at the top of the hill; it was somewhat crowded up there, but it was still very pleasant. The top of the hill provides a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Luang Prabang on all sides.Visited May 2023Traveled on businessWritten April 14, 2024
- Shelley MAlbany, New Zealand906 contributionsGreat view from the topWe wanted to avoid the crowds and went after lunchtime. Small fee to enter and we climbed up all the stairs from the palace side. Beautiful views from the top. Make sure to go down the other side as there is a lot to see on the way back down. We wore jandels, but running shoes would be much easier and take water as it was really hot.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 15, 2024
- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,630 contributionsNice view of LP from hereSteps going up this hill/mountain are near the Night Market of Luang Prabang. Due to very hot weather, it is recommended that it be visited in the early morning and late in the afternoon. There is a beautiful Stupa here and a small temple on the right side of the steps. Bring water and take your time to climb it Enjoy the views!Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 19, 2024
- dianedinkyDunfermline, United Kingdom1,346 contributionsLovely experience with much to see as you go upNot only fantastic views from the top (as you would expect), but surprisingly, much to see as I made my way to the top. Such as the Hermit Monk's House, Golden Buddha statues, a small temple, many protector/defender statues, dragon staircases - as well as a cat that followed me and was running up the narrow wall ledge! I didn't find the Stupa at the top that interesting. I had seen many more beautiful buildings and temples in my time in town. However, well worth it for the overall walk. I did early morning and was not hot and not a difficult walk.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten May 3, 2024
- wonderwoman41England, United Kingdom90 contributionsStunning views from the top, well worth the climb up.Great views from the top, overlooking Luang Prabang and the Mekong river. We walked from the riverside up the steep steps which is hard going in the afternoon heat. However, the monks residence and Buddha cave were interesting stopping points along the way.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 6, 2024

A temple on top of a mountain with a great view of the city. An even better view of the sunrise/sunset, although I recommend the sunrise more, as there seem to be less people around willing to wake up at 5 in the morning. There's a fee to enter (~$1 USD) and quite a large amount of peddlers at the base of the climb, but just pay and plough on through.

Because it is one of the higest points in Luang Prabang it os also one of the best place to enjoy sunset on the river in the city. This place is popular so it is better to be a little earlier - coming to the end it's hard to get through the whole crowd - unless you're very tall :) Some people avoided the crowd by climbing rocks outside the fence.
Climbing up is not difficult or tiring. You must remember the right outfit - this is a holy place.

To avoid crowd, we went up there during day time when most visitors come for sunset view. It was nice and view is great. There is a small chapel too. Climbing up was not that hard. A healthy 5 year old child (like mine) can handle it.

Mount Phousi is there, in front of the Royal Palace, with an inviting stairway, so there is no excuse not to go up. Do not expect an amazing site, but it is worth every step you climb. My suggestion: start from the main road, just accross from the Palace, climb all the way to the Pagoda, then climb down on the other side - there is a lot to be seen there. In the mount you will see some Buddhist monuments, quite a few Buddha statues, and the place is great for a walk.
But of course the main attraction is not the Mount itself, but the (almost) 360 degree view of Luang Prabang and adjacent aereas. The place is a favorite for sunsets - but it gets really crowded at this time.

It’s very close to centre of town maybe 5 minutes to start of walk up hill. If your reasonable fit it will take 10 minutes you can climb up from 2 different sides.
While up too you get an amazing 360 degree view of the town, the mountains and the river, it’s worth going up to mount phousi just for the views.
Up top a nice temple that worth a quick look, also up top someone selling drinks chips etc.
Lots of people go up late afternoon for the sunset view of the river and mountains in background very nice sunset views.
Cost is only 300 to climb mount phousi

After watching the monks do the Alms before dawn it’s a good time to go up the 400 steps to the top of the hill to watch the sunrise over the town of Luan Prabang. The Khan river reflects the redness of the sky. Be patient with rude folk of other cultures who push around to get the view. It’s starting to spoil the experience for others.still it’s worth the climb. It can be cold up there so a fleece might help.

This is a fairly gentle uphill climb to a small temple and great vistas of the rivers, the town and surrounding countryside. There are steps all the way, which start from the main street just opposite the Palace, and another set of steps which come out on the street which lines the Nam Khong River. So you can start from either side and coem down a different way.
There is a ticket booth about three quarters of the way up, which you need to stop at if you intend to go further up to the temple. Can't remember, how much it was - negligible though. The routes up and down are lined with interesting sites of religius significance; Buddha's footprint, Days of the week Buddha statues, monasteries, a sacred Bodhi tree.
Maybe, do this walk early in the day or later in the afternoon/evening when it is cooler.

It's located right in the middle of town and costs 20k you get up to the top.
It's about a 15 minute walk to get to the top, but not to strenuous.
If you ate going to the top for sunset, just be aware that there a lot of people crammed into a small space also trying to get the same shot as you!
The view is beautiful though as you can see the whole of the town and the river on both sides.
Well worth going up though.

From the top, we can get various good scenery for shooting photos. We hate crowds. Thus, we avoided sunset time and climb in the morning, which was the correct choice, I think. I recommend the entrance of the riverside rather than the museum side for going up. The slope is less steep and there are many buddha statues, which could provide a good opportunity to get rest. When going down, it would be better to choose the other slope to the museum, so that we could touch down on the main street and find a nice restaurant for lunch after that without wasting time.

We arrived here around 6:30am. It was 20,000kip ($3CAD) to enter. There are 2 entrances. We took one on the way up and the other on the way down. We were not trying to get there for sunrise but wanted to be there early enough to miss the sunrise crowd and the mid day crowds. Which we did. It is a 100 meters high mountain in the centre of town. There are 328 steps well paved but very steep.
Mount Phousi was constructed in 1804 by King Anourat, there is a 20 meter tall golden stupa sits on a narrow terrace at the top of the mountan. Once at the top you can enjoy incredible 360 degree panorama views over the city. There are lots of different Buddha & other statues around the property.
The site is much bigger then we were expecting (Site map in pictures). We had about an hour and a half here and felt that was just enough Time.
This is a sacred site so please dress respectfully. Shoulders & knees must be covered.
