Regarded as the most prominent baroque poet from the Republic of Ragusa, Ivan Gundulic lived from 1589 to 1638. The monument itself was erected in 1893 in dubrovniks largest square, Poljana.

An important statue to Croatian culture and history, situated in a lively market square with local produce.
The statue has bronze relief panels below it, most interesting for GOT fans, one features Dubrovnik as a lady on her throne being attacked by a dragon representing Venice and a lion representing the Ottoman Empire.

This rather grand statue is situated in Gundulić Square, in the Old Town of Dubrovnik, right behind the Cathedral.

The Square is surrounded by rather elegant and grand buildings with shops, bars and restaurants.

It pays hommage to the poet, lyricist and dramatist, Dživo Franov Gundulić, also known as Ivan Gundulić. The Square where the statue stands is named in his honour.

He was born in Dubrovnik (Republic of Ragusa, now in Croatia) on 8th January 1589 and died there on the 8th December 1638, aged nearly 50.

During his life he was the most prominent of the Baroque poets. Today he is now regarded as the Croatian national poet and his picture appears on the 50 Kuna bank note (roughly £5.60).

The life sized bronze statue depicts Gundulić dressed in rather fine clothing and appears to be wearing a wig. It stands on a small octagonal pedestal which is supported by an ornate four sided plinth. At it's base there are two steps which are popular resting place and meeting point.

When we were here, on Tuesday 7th June, there were a number of market stalls near by selling local products.

Gundulic Square, locally called Gundulićeva Poljana is the home of the daily fruit and vegetable market and right in the middle is the Monument to the 18th-century Poet Ivan Gundulic. Surrounded by shops and cafes the Monument of Poet Ivan Gundulic it’s a popular tourist destination, especially when there are Summer concerts playing around the Monument.
The Statue was made by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Rendić, and officially unveiled on Sunday, July 26, 1893. It was said at the time that there were more people from outside Dubrovnik than local citizens. The four bronze reliefs on the pedestal, show scenes from Ivan Gundulic’ s famous poem Osman.

TIP: My favorite time was early in the morning before the market opens, and late at night when all the hundreds cruise ship passengers have left.

Right in the heart of the square, and at the bottom of the famous stairs from Game of Thrones. Well worth visiting.

A very impressive tall bronze statue , located in the middle of Gundulic Square , in honor of the Poet Ivan "Macica" Gundulic , born in Dubrovnik in 1589 ( on January 8th like Elvis Presley , David Bowie , Stephen Hawking and....Kim Jong-un ) . In the very nice square , there is a picturesque fresh produce market every morning . Great place for people watching and great photo opps (The Cathedral dome behind the square) .

As the name implies, the square honors Dubrovnik-born poet Ivan Gundulić with a statue of the man and this square which is serves as a crossroads for visitors. It is the city market during the day, a nice area for outdoor dining in the evening and a wonderful place for photography all the time. Despite being a very interesting and scenic area, it is easily missed.

Once you have spent time along Pred Dvorom seeing St. Blaise, the Bell Tower, the Rector’s Palace and the Cathedral, stand in the street in front of the Rector’s Palace facing the cathedral. To your right you will see a small narrow street (Od Puca). Walk into Od Puca and in ½ block it will open onto Gundulić Square. Take the time to walk through the market, do some people watching and see the statue of Gundulić. Also keep looking up, as the area affords excellent photo ops of the cathedral dome.

When you are done head to opposite corner (kitty corner) of the market from where you entered and continue down Uz Jezuite to the beautiful steps usually filled with other picture-taking tourists. Climb the steps being sure to turn around to look at the street and square behind you, then proceed into the square at the top of the steps. On your right is St. Ignatius Church. Be sure to go in!
