- orrdinNew York883 contributionsInteresting but mostly closed at the momentThe Panama Canal is a unique place and this is the main way to see it from land. Unfortunately most of the visiting spaces are closed at the moment. Make sure to co W when a ship is scheduled to pass through the locks.Visited December 2022Traveled with familyWritten December 25, 2022
- ElissaLos Angeles, California595 contributionsVery CrowdedI went here after doing a partial canal transit, and it definitely is a great viewpoint to see how the canal works. However, it is VERY crowded. People are pushing to get a view, holding their phones way up high in front of you and you're shoulder to shoulder with people. There's a super tiny gift shop that you can't even walk in with all the people. If you don't like crowds, this isn't the place for you.Visited November 2022Written December 26, 2022
- TAMAN1951Liberty Lake, Washington6,465 contributionsImpressive siteWhile the site is impressive and historically significant, it is not yet ramped up to accommodate the volume of visitors. - sussexrowmarkRye, United Kingdom512 contributionsNot worth the effort just nowI echo what other recent reviews have said. The visitor centre was still closed in late December. Very crowded viewing area - and despite the morning peak time for ships none going through. Get your visitor information at the excellent Canal Museum in the Casca Viejo and watch the ships from the Amador Causeway .Visited December 2022Written January 2, 2023
- Carli MCanada270 contributionsAwesome to see a ship go through!Get here early. Frankly, with the actual visitors centre under construction the ticket price ($18USD) is only worth it if you get to watch a ship go through. Saw a lot of people arriving after the ship had gone through and I'm not sure how long they would have to wait to see the next one. Maybe the IMAX movie is worth it but didn't stick around as it didn't start for another 45 mins and had more stuff to go see. Can't even explore the visitors centre because it's closed. The viewing platform is tight and crowded with people. Glad I did it, wouldn't bother doing it againVisited January 2023Traveled soloWritten January 12, 2023

Visitor center is undergoing remodeling so it was somewhat limited but still very worthwhile. - linda eNew York City, New York124 contributionsAfter An IMAX Movie You Can See How Lock Actually WorksPlan on spending at least two hours for the movie and the viewing of the lock as a ship passes through. Be forewarned, ships aren't constantly in transit, but are usually there in the morning before noon and after 2. We went and the wrong time the first day and decided to return the following day instead as no ships were passing when we arrived. The movie is in English with Spanish subtitles. The bathrooms were clean and the snack bar, extensive - cold and hot coffee drinks, snack foods and a light sandwich selection. Nothing fancy, just enough to cool you off after standing in the heat to watch the ships pass.Visited January 2023Written January 22, 2023
- couchieLondon, United Kingdom137 contributionsDecent public bus takes you to MirafloresNo need to book a taxi or trip to the Miraflores canal visitors centre. You can take the C810 public bus from just outside the Albrook Metro Station. The journey costs 25cents, lasts 20mins and drops you in front of the centre’s entrance. Arrive 8am! Ships pass into the canal through the 1914 locks between 8-10am. Or there’s an afternoon shift when the ships exit the locks. And little in between these times.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 28, 2023
- Janek KHamilton, Canada68 contributionsImpressive Feat of Engineering to SeeWe visited here on a Wednesday in early January 2023. The weather was perfect- sunny and warm. When our tour bus first arrived at 11 am, we were told that there were no ships arriving to pass through the locks until 2 pm. So, first tip- check when a ship will be going through, otherwise it would be a disappointing visit here. We came back at about 1:50 pm and the place was very crowded with spectators to watch a Holland cruise ship Zandamm pass. We did see the Miraflores locks open to allow the passage of the ship. Simultaneously, in the the new locks that are larger than Panamax south of Miraflores, we could see that an even larger cruise ship was passing through. One issue is that the cost of watching this is a bit exorbitant at over $16 USD per person. You cannot just see the Miraflores Locks, you are also given a ticket to an IMAX film about the Panama Canal's history.Visited January 2023Written February 5, 2023
- travelsuitBerlin, Germany329 contributionsInteresting to seeReally enjoyed visit. Easy to do Uber and then pay entrance. Short imax documentary on the history of the canal. Was well made but distracting by sheer numbers of US tourists industrial eating during the viewing. The place is probably a must, but the experience is hardly pleasant. The price of the ticket is 17$, but the museum is closed. All you can do then I s watch a movie with Morgan Freeman and observe the ships going through (if you came at the right time). The movie is a piece of propaganda, you learn little history (unlike the museum in Casco Viejo). Of the four observation desks only one is open and it is so crowded and hot that you may end up in the fifth row, sweating under the burning sun). I have no clue why they open only one deck and my guess is, they don’t care (since it’s a must…)

I heard the ships pass thru the locks early in the AM or after 2pm, so I left my hotel from downtown (Riu) and took an Uber at 2pm. I arrived and went to buy my tickets and saw the next IMax movie started in 5 minutes...great timing. The workers were friendly and helpful (I left my hat in the theater and they were waiting for me to come get it).
As I walked out of the theater, there was a ship passing through the lock! As they say, "Timing is everything" and it couldn't have been better. After this I easily got an Uber to see Casco Viejo!

This is a must-do if you are visiting Panamá City. At first, to me, it sounded a little boring, but wow! I loved every minute! We watched the movie (narrated by Morgan Freeman), and I learned so much about the history of the canal and the role the US played. I would recommend this to anyone...especially those who have an interest in history.

This is a must do on a trip to Panama City. Plan to spend a few hours watching the huge vessels go through the lock. The announcer spoke in Spanish and English to ensure everyone had an excellent experience. Make sure to watch the IMAX movie on the history of the Panama Canal.

flew into panama city, spent the first and last night at rio auroporto hotel, it's fabulous, could spend a week there! rented a car for the week, drove to pedasi the first day, it was nice, then to santa catalina and stayed at nativo boutique hotel, it was awesome except for the road to get there, 11 kilometers of pure hell!, then to boquette, beautiful! nice little mountain town with lots of expats, the hotl valle del rio was the best room i had all week, really nice balcony overlooking a small river and the mountains, would definitely stay there again! then drove to rio hato, stayed at Lq Perla de farillion bed and breakfast, very nice hosts and very reasonable price, no Tv though, close to the beach, driving in Panama is fine excep

Great viewing deck which allows you to watch the ships going through the locks. iMac film is very entertaining. During our visit in August 2023 the rest of the exhibition was not open. One point to note is that you are not allowed back in to the viewing platform once you have left - allow plenty of time for the viewing platform as it takes a while for a ship to transit both locks!

Had a great time. Took a $7 Uber from downtown Panama City and paid $17 each for Imax movie and lock observation area. The 3D movie was exceptional and lasted almost 40 minutes. We arrived at 10:45am and was well informed that there wouldn't be any ships passing through the locks until 2pm. Everyone was polite, and we didn't have any problems. There is a nice cafeteria on the 2nd floor. We did wait for the shops to come through, and it was very crowded by that point. However, the upper viewing area has a theater type seating area so you can see no matter where you're seated. The best view is right behind the railing though if you'd like to stand there for a half hr to secure your position. I would visit again and take visitors there to see this man made wonder.

The 3D movie is terrific, but the viewing area over the locks is managed so badly, very few people get to actually see the locks. Everyone leaves their seats and crowds the railings, so only people at the railing can see anything (a very small number of people). The majority of the people who have bought tickets can't see a thing. I think this could be addressed by insisting people stay in their seats. At a minimum, it would be nice if the person on the intercom reminded people to let shorter people go in front, so more people could see.

A very interesting tourist attraction in that you watch a ship or two go by over the span of about one or two hours and you get to see this industrial process up close. There are some exhibit panels and a couple of guides who add an element of festivity to it. Some kids might find it slow.
On the whole, if you don't work in a shipyard all day, it's pretty wonderous to think about how humongous the capacity for this canal system is, how humongous these ships are, and how much of the world relies on them.
There's also an accompanying IMAX video.
The restaurant is closed and the snack bar is pretty meager.

We were on the fence about going after having been on canals in the UK and knowing how locks worked we figure it was "just another lock"
We stopped in on our way back from Monkey Island having stopped at Pedro Miguel earlier.
It was just after 3 when we got there. The viewing platform was very busy (only the lower platform open due to renovations), so getting a clear view was tricky, but there were ships li Ed up waiting to come through so we were happy to wait for a good spot.
There is commentary throughout the ship's passing and the smoothness and efficiency of the workers and locks is amazing.
It's also fun to see the crew on the boat feeling like stars as they wave at the crowds!
The IMAX presentation was phenomenal. A lot of information about the history and present day running of the canal.
You are not able to see the new locks, but can see ship passing along the embankment of the diversion from Pedro Miguel to the new locks at Mira Flores. It would be great to be able to be up close to see them pass through. The IMAX movie does talk a little about them.

We are planning to be there July 2021. does anyone know if the visitor center will be open. If it is not open, is there anything to see there? i.e. is it worth going at all - can you see the canal or get to any viewing sites?

Sorry for the late reply. Be careful with taxis. They will try to take advantage of you. I came out of Miraflores Locks and I told the taxi man how much I would pay to go to Albrook Mall -- a total of $6. They will try to get you to pay $8 or $10.
Most of what I did was travel via Uber, but I did not know about Uber when out at Miraflores Locks. Uber is, in my opinion, the most economical way to travel and generally a nicer vehicle.

We took an Uber from the airport and liked him so much that we negotiated a price for a private tour the next day. Much cheaper than hiring a taxi or booking through a tour company. Clean, modern vehicle and very safe and courteous driver.
I saved him as Jose “Panama” in my contacts; his WhatsApp number is +507 6890 8535

The truth is, the big & interesting ships are no more passing there. Though there are still some small and medium ships passing, make sure you take the schedule in advance, otherwise you could end up waiting for hours. In general, the best times are early morning and late afternoon.

how do we get from a cruise ship to this visitors center without touring the old city? we would also like to see the expensive homes near the airport or paitilla and /or the newer area of panama city? If so, what would be the cost and how do we arrange it? we would not want to miss being on our cruise ship while it goes through the canal. .

I find your question a little confusing ??do you want to go to the visitors center and see the Mira Flores locks and also experience the ride thru the locks and canal. I was only there once but we used the hop on /off bus($34 for one day/$37 for two days) to see most of panama city. You can check their routing and see if it suits you)The Maria Flores has a small museum($) and a grandstand to view ships going thru the Locks. I (and my wife)found the old city very interesting using the self walking guide. Taxi's are very reasonable and everyone uses American $$.
