Visited whilst on day trip to capital. Interesting cathedral with lots of history. Not sure about some of the ceiling painting. Look up and you’ll see what I mean

Nice Church

It’s not as unique as the Rosario Church but this one is also very good. Saint Romero is buried in the basement. The sanctuary is on the main floor and is very impressive.

Not a good idea to be a priest in this church! Many don't survive! very interesting history, but I'll let you visit to find out for your self! pretty inside, make sure you go under to the vault.

First Attraction I visited in San Salvador

Located about 500 feet away from my hotel, I visited after checking in.Facing it is a park with the statue of Barrios, San Salvador signage and some Christmas.

The altar is beautiful. Behind it are paintings depicting the life of Jesus.. There are also two huge paintings of Cardinal Romero. stained glass windows, etc. Note that on both sides of the main altar,
are two other altars with religous statues. Highly recommended to visit!

Enormous Cathedral

This enormous cathedral is located directly off Plaza Barrios.

It’s free to enter and has two levels.

The lower level is the crypt and contains the remains of notable individuals and a tribute to Monsenor Romero, a priest who was brutally assassinated in the early days of the civil war (1980) for criticising the government. The second level is the church proper which features a massive dome, not too dissimilar to that of St Peters.

The architecture is impressive, even compared with cathedrals/churches in the rest of Central America.

A must visit while in downtown El Salvador.

Architecturally the structure is not astounding. There was a mural by a noted artist that was removed by the current archbishop so the façade is even less notable. Still, the main church is located close to other landmarks, does not have an admission fee, is peaceful, and has historical significance. Whether you visit to admire the interior murals or spend time in the cool, peaceful environment to meditate and pray, it is a must-visit site.

Be sure to research the location and related occurrences prior to visiting to maximize the experience.

Lovely cathedral

Spectacular Cathedral!

This was definitely one of my favorite building in all of San Salvador. The architectural design is flawless, both inside and outside. I loved the memorial to Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero, who was brutally killed back in 1980, and became a hero of this small nation. Just beautiful at every corner, especially the painted dome!

Beautiful interior, Calm city centre oasis

From the outside this is an interesting building and on the inside it is both an oasis of calm from the city centre hustle and bustle and a beautifully decorated altar and side chapels.

I am not religious but I found this both a beautiful and calming place.
