Overview
More
Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Bascarsija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isakovic founded the town. The word Bascarsija derives from the Turkish language. The word "bas" which is "bas" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "carsija" which is "carsi" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market". Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Bascarsija is half the size that it once was. Bascarsija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Bascarsija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Bascarsija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.

It has that middle eastern/ Balkan feel you can expect to get. You have narrow streets lined with white rough stones, everything smells of ćevapi and coffee. You can find so many great craftsmen here, and see them make they own products, especially the metalworkers.

You can’t help but enjoy the winding streets and endless charm of Bascarsija. The walking area is reminiscent of a Turkish bazaar, without the annoying shopkeepers beckoning. This was a thoroughly civilized shopping experience meandering from shop to shop with zero hassle. There are an...More

Bascarsija is a must see in Sarajevo. Variety of small shops, cafes, fast foods (burek, kebab, čevapi), restaurants (although sometimes overpriced, but still high quality). Could get overcrowded during the day, so it is worth to go there in the morning.

Bascarsija is an excellent place to walk around and hang out. The small shops and restaurants around Bascarsija are pretty. Tasting the legendary Burek is a must.
