This was by far the best place we visited in South America, and the guide highlithed the most important information about this stunning complex, we wanted to stay longer but for the schedule of the train ticket it wasnt possible.
This place is magic

What a dream come true to experience the historical and architectural site. Not only was it a feast for the eyes to see the beautiful ruins and the surrounding mountains, but it was also a treat to have an indigenous guide who had an exception love for his nation and heritage. The property is extremely well maintained with clearly marked trails and easy to understand buildings once the guide explained the layout. Make it happen, just go! Bus takes you to the top but there is still a pretty good amount of walking, and the high elevation can leave you breathless. But oh, so worth it!

In my opinion you don’t need a guide. And they are not required to enter. Just research the highlights (guard houses, sacred plaza, temple of 3 windows, Intihuatana, Temple of the Sun, etc) and watch YouTube videos on the site beforehand. Also download a map of the site.

We stopped quite a bit for photos and it took ~3 hours. Ideally we would have had 4-5 but train issues got us in late.

Route is one-way so make sure to spend good time at the upper observation points at the start. Cannot easily get back to them later.

The path through the complex is well defined with ropes constraining your to the path. You cannot just wander the entire site as you like.

If is very cloudy, be patient and wait. Often the clouds will blow over and you get at least windows of sun hitting the site.

After ticket check, and before entering the ruins, it is a steep path up then you hit a fork in the trail to upper terrace and lower terrace. TAKE THE UPPER TERRACE TRAIL. Yes, this is a bit more of a steep hike but worth it. This leads to the famous vista shots you see online and in social media (and attached photo). At the top terrace, the first vista point is not the best one. Wait and it comes further down the trail.

Most popular ruins are towards the start when you enter the main complex. So slow down and enjoy them. Sun temple, sacred plaza and temple with 3 windows, and Intihuatana.

Getting a pic with llama up close and ruins in background is a great shot. But at least when we were there the number of llamas were limited. And most were in areas off limits to tourists (behind ropes). So be patient and work with what you have.

My wife and I spent 9 days visiting Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lima. Peru for Less was the company we used and Rylee McGowan was our travel expert. She had everything worked out to the minute. Every Guide we had was excellent and very engaging. Rylee was always available to assist before, during and follow up after the trip was good.

I highly recommend if you are considering Peru or other South American countries that you give Rylee a call or email. rylee@latinamericaforless.com

We went to Machu Picchu in November 2021 at 6:00 in the morning. We can confirm that a guide is not required to enter Machu Picchu. So, if you want to see the site in your own tempo - you can visit Machu Picchu without a tour. We bought entrance tickets on the official site of Machu Picchu, and train tickets on the site of PeruRail. There were discounts for less popular departure times.

We wanted to see Machu Picchu emerging from the mist, so we booked the first time slot in the morning - at 6:00. We bought bus tickets a day before in Machu Picchu Pueblo (there are large signs Bus Tickets near the bus stop), came to the stop at 5:25 and took one of the first buses around 5:35. When we climbed to the lower terrace, there were 7 people including us, and nobody in the ruins. When we left the ruins around 9:45, there were hundreds of tourists everywhere.

We didn't take a bus down, instead we hiked about 1,5 hour in the fantastic cloud forest. The trail is clearly marked, the hike down is easy even in wet weather.

So breathtaking. Was a struggle getting here including a cancelled train due to mud slide on the tracks but it was all worth it. We entered around 7 am. It was super cloudy and drizzling but we waited around the top to see the clouds clear and slowly reveal the city and the peaks behind. Took about 3 hours to explore the top level. Most things were roped off and we were directed to a circular patch back towards the exit. Would have liked to have done the lower path S well but we didn’t see an option for that route. Definitely glad we had our ponchos which we used in the morning portion of it (no umbrellas allowed) and water proof hiking boots. Serious bucket list check.
