Hiking Huayna Picchu
Oct 2020
An hour and a half climb up Huayna Picchu to take in the best views of Machu Picchu and the Andes that surround it. The hike is very steep and quite challenging, but totally worth it if you can make it to the top. Weather notwithstanding, the hike while challenging and long, is not nearly as dangerous as some pictures and websites would have you believe. After taking in the views, it’s another 45 minutes to hike back to the base of Machu Picchu where you can then tour the Inca city. Otherwise, you can hike another hour down to the Temple of the Moon (The Great Cavern), a mysterious Incan structure built inside of a cave. If you are someone that loves to hike and is in relatively good shape, then this adventure is one you will enjoy. It not only brings that rewarding sense of accomplishment, but it also offers some of the most spectacular views you’ll encounter while in Peru.

You have come a long way, and it has taken you a long time to get here. This view is as good as it gets!!!! Yes, you are going to have to CLIMB some stairs to get here, but what a reward!

Very challenging—but worth it

If we knew the climb was so intense, we probably wouldn't have made it. However, we were very glad once we got to the top (and back to Machu Picchu!). The hike is definitely hard, but the views from the top are ridiculously cool. We caught up with a family we'd met earlier on our trip, so we had a blast going at it together. Give it at least a try, you won't regret it.

Huayna Picchu which means "Young Peak" is the large mountain that sits behind Machu Picchu. I wasn't able to climb this due to lack of fitness, but anyone who is an able hiker should be able to reach the summit for the spectacular views over the ancient city.

Unbelievable

We climbed this with our guide. Let me start by saying we are in our early sixties. This fact was evident in that we never saw anyone during the climb that was over 30-35. Not that it can't be done, but you better be in condition to do the climb.

Entry is restricted by the entry time of your ticket and this ensures safety. Once you are doing it you will see why this is important. The lower portion is through the rainforest but as you climb, some of the steps become narrower and narrower. At some points the steps are only maybe 4 inches deep and 1 foot wide. When you go through the tunnel it is maybe 3 feet of clearance. Thus if crowded it would be of concern.

Once you are at the top it is amazing. Direct view down to Machu Picchu and the valley.

Was the climb physically demanding - yes. Would we do it again - probably once was enough but we are very glad we did.

One of the most difficult hike. The Huayna Picchu trek leads to a view point overlooking the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

If you’re in decent shape, this is a must if you go to Machu Picchu. It’s a stone staircase and path, kind of narrow and something you wouldn’t want to do in the rain, but so worth while.
