The long street starts at the Municipal Complex downtown, and ends at The Plaza de Armas. It was very close to our hotel, so we had occasion to walk down it, and drive down it several times during our stay in Cuzco.
We found it to be a very busy street filled with Money Exchange Stores, Hair Cutting Stores, Souvenir Stores plus plenty of Restaurants. We felt safe walking up and down, even late in the evening. People seemed very nice and helpful.
Since it is such a busy thoroughfare, everybody gets to see it at least once while staying in this city.

Avenida El Sol is not just another street. There is history and design to this street. When we look at this area, we all see the “Paccha Fountain” at the tip of where two streets (waterways) meet. During our visit, the fountain was turned off to conserve water. Along this route, you'll find the Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), the Justice Building, money changers, and several shops.
Depending on the direction you take, you'll either go uphill or downhill. Both provides photo opportunities. Take an opportunity to explore the area around the fountain. You'll see there is more to this avenue than what the eye can immediately see.

The Avenida El Sol was the avenue we took to walk from our hotel to the Plaza de Armas. Parts of it are very nice, but it is a busy, commercial street. Luckily, it's safe!

According to several people I talked with, the Avenida el Sol used to be a river running through the city several decades ago before it was turned into a walkway. There are a lot of things one encounters here that could be anywhere else, e.g. snack vendors, crafts, restaurants, etc. However, for tourists and others wanting to travel, there are a lot of travel agencies and at least one airline company's office on this street. For history buffs, this was part of the rich history of the Inca empire as this street, beginning from the plaza which held the palace of the emperor, goes by the Korikancha Sun Temple, one of the holiest if not the holiest site at the time of the Spanish arrivals. The farther down you go you will notice more and more how the mountains rise in front of you as if the city were sort of spread before you. It is a nice walk, and it is free so not a bad deal. Also, be sure to check out the awesome full color mural and the sun fountain which you will eventually hit.

This street is the main street in Cusco and houses internet cafes, banks, money exchangers, tour operators, a post office and airline ticket offices.
A few blocks down the street is the Iglesia de Santa Domingo. Further down from here it gets less tourists however, there are a couple of small indoor markets and local eateries. And if you go beyond here you will reach a giant bronze statue where just past this is the Terminal Terrestre.

Just after checking in at the San Agustín Plaza we took a walk towards the Plaza de Armas in search of some breakfast. We were greatly surprised at the size of buildings and cleanliness of Avenida del Sol. A walk from Wanchaq Station and Market along Avenida del Sol towards the Plaza de Armas will let you admire some very important sights in Cusco.

Avenida El Sol is a major street that ends at Plaza de Armas and has tons of restaurants and shops for tourists to peruse. There are also banks with ATMs and lots of police presence. I felt safe at night as well.

Am I missing something - this is only a street with a few touristy shops, banks and other low grade facilities. It may be long but it is NO Oxford Street, Champs Elysee or Rodeo Drive.

Lots of shopping, crowds, and up hills. We found a fun indoor market with all the shopping one could possible do in a few hours. Fun day overall, but lots of walking..wear comfortable shoes!

Avenida El Sol is just a commercial business street, there is no attraction to it, except that the Santo Domingo church is along this street. Lined with camera shops, ATMs and pharmacies, there isn't much here of interest. Probably the least interesting street in Cusco. However, if you need certain things like Claro Centrale (for cell phone or blackberry service) or Radio Shack (computer supplies) or the Post Office then this is the street you'll head to.
