- GmoutsidePerth, Australia226 contributionsWonderful placeCusco is a delightful small city in which several days can be spent, exploring all the lovely buildings, cafes and restaurants. It can be very busy but is especially lovely early in the morning before the crowds come out. It is friendly city but like all tourists spots around the world one should remain alert. Centrally is very safe in the evening and early night.Visited March 2020Written April 25, 2020
- Paul M11 contributions1500 years of history in a single cityCusco is a delightful city, and the central main square is very historic. It is surrounded by churches and a cathedral, all deliberately built upon older Incan temples. The cathedrals and churches are full of ornate decorations and impressive paintings, some rather odd (Jesus on the cross wearing a dress, the Last Supper with a guinea pig as the meal!). The main market nearby is superb, with dozens of things to see, wear or try, including 30+ varieties of potato! The Temple of the Sun is a must-see, even though it was built upon by a Catholic monastery. The precision of the Incan building blocks is a marvel to see. Cusco is generally safe to walk around, even at night, so long as you can catch your breath at these altitudes!Visited December 2019Written January 5, 2020
- Jeffery FScottsdale, Arizona31 contributionsCathedrals of CuscoGreat place to visit especially in.the off season when temperatures are mild and crowds are thinner. We visited in June as the locals were already busy celebrating the month long celebrations welcoming the 'winter solstice' which occurs on 24 June. All day and well into the night celebrations of music and dancing in the main square and parading along the streets [ it did make it a bit difficult to get around in our tour van). Visiting the cathedrals and the amazing architecture and ornate paintings inside were breathtaking and a religious experience in itself! We felt pretty safe walking the streets from the square's restaurants back to the hotel, but you have to be aware of your surroundings, and the numerous street peddlers, which Can get annoying! Otherwise we found the Cathedrals of Cusco to be beautiful and filled our cameras with pictures! !Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 15, 2023

The Historic District encompasses the massive Plaza de Armas, and several Museums, Art Galleries and Restaurants in the vicinity. The Cathedral, Coricancha, and surrounding areas with the Monuments, Murals, amazing scenery on the hillside, and the vibrant people made us fall in love with this ancient and clean area in this city.
The precisely created Inca Foundations of all the buildings, and the stunning Balconies all around just made us want to stop and stare. Even the numerous vendors and hawkers were not able to distract or annoy us.
There was so much to do and see here. We were only here for four days, so had to hit the ground running without giving ourselves enough time to acclimatize with the high altitude here. In spite of this, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and would love to return to see and explore everything again at a more relaxed pace.

Cusco is a city that makes you fall in love from the very beginning. It has a magic in each of its streets, which one cannot resist. The memory of Cusco will always remain in our memory.

I recomend to hire a guide or the wak with free walking tours, for to grasp the details you need a local guide with Inca knowledge.

Excellent museums and ornate, historical churches. The pre-Spanish artifacts in the museums are amazing, some going back two thousand years.

Cuzco was above all the origin and the reason for my trip. Four months in Peru, in the so-called navel of the world, where once you return home you realize that they are not enough.

Hello all, we are going to Peru in June. Any tips for our trip to Cusco would be appreciated. How much time should I allow for Cusco? How about Machu Picchu? What time did you leave and how much time did you spend there? I assume you came back the same day to Cusco? Sorry for all the questions but I have never done anything like this before and I am a little clueless.
Thanks,
Barry

Hi! We landed in Cusco and immediately left to go to the Sacred Valley. This helps to acclimate to the high altitude. We were there for two days and then went to Macchu Picchu for two days. We then returned to Cusco for two more days. We made our arrangements through Avanti Tours in the US which then subcontracted with Condor Tours. They had EXCELLENT guides and services. We loved our hotels--the Casa Andina in the Sacred Valley was very nice and even had a planetarium on the grounds! Then we also enjoyed the Inkaterra Pueblo Hotel in Aguas Caliente--the town at the base of Macchu Picchu. In Cusco we stayed at another nice hotel, the Aranwa Boutique Hotel. Condor arranged for our train to Macchu Picchu, our various tours and guides and travel within Peru. We also got our entrance passes and hiking passes for Huyana Picchu in this same manner. Have a great time! It is a trip of a lifetime!
