I recommend everybody to visit this place. Especially with a free tour by the Indonesian Heritage Society. It was very interesting, you see extraordinary ancient things from Bali, Yogyakarta, etc. But be careful, this place closes at 16.00 - 17.00.

Yes the museum is kids friendly in terms of free spaces but if you mean "kids friendly" in terms of activity I think not. But the museum is really big and you can enjoy it.
