About
Klungkung Temple and Klungkung Palace is a historical building complex situated in Semarapura, the capital of the Klungkung Regency (kabupaten) on Bali, Indonesia. The palace (puri) was erected at the end of the 17th century, but largely destroyed during the Dutch colonial conquest in 1908. Today the basic remains of the palace are the court of justice, the Kertha Gosa Pavilion, and the main gate that bears the date Saka 1622 (AD 1700). Within the old palace compound is also a floating pavilion, Bale Kambing, which was added in the 1940s. The descendants of the rajas that once ruled Klungkung today live in Puri Agung, a residence to the west of the old palace, which was built after 1929.

This is an interesting pretty place to visit, and very pretty, in a lovely detailed Balinese way. I enjoyed my first visit a few years ago, but this time I really benefited from the guide, it brought the history to life. I think half an hour is plenty of time to enjoy it, ands id combine it with other activities in a day - but definitely worth a stop or detour.

Klungkung Palace and temple were visited on our way to Besakih Temple during our vacation in Bali. This place is not too touristy and actually quite calm. It calls to visit this place.

There is a small entrance fee but worth the experience. There is a museum besides the temple and the court of justice as well.

The rooftop of one of the places inside depicts paintings - which are quite good. We also bought one handmade painting of Hindu God Ganesha from a painter who sat in one of the buildings there.

Recommended for visit.

This temple connects to the history of Bali. It is said that this place was the high court of Bali in ancient times.

Very laid back temple. Do not feel that you need to buy from the local people. The history of the temple speaks for itself

Peek into history of Bali justice system intertwined with hinduism. Do not feel pressurised to buy sarong or paintings.

Our guide took us to Klungkung Temple on our way to a cycling trip at Sideman.

Slightly wary of temple fatigue we were pleasantly surprised as Klungkung Temple offered much more than a standard temple visit, and as we'd arrived quite early in the day was free of the usual crowds.

Besides the temple regalia, what was equally as interesting was watching two Balinese brides preparing for their wedding ceremony.

If you are in this area this is a good stop. It will only take you 30 minutes to see everything. The ceiling has some pretty graphic scenes on it so it you have curious children beware! I was a little shocked to see some of them. Of course our guide pointed them out so maybe just don't point them out.

A quick stop on our tour, the highlight is the painted ceilings depicting heaven, hell and in between. They have a computer that also describes the reliefs for better understanding. Recommended.
