Known as “Spring in Niushou, Autumn in Qixia”, the most beautiful autumn scenery in Jinling (Nanjing) can be found at Qixia Mountain. Qixia Mountain is one of China’s four major maple-viewing destinations. In October, the maple leaves begin to turn red, and as autumn deepens, the continuous expanse of maple forests, bathed in hues of red, creates a spectacular and breathtaking sight.

There is a monastery built in the mountain. If you happen to be a Buddhist and you are familiar with Master Hsing Yun - the founder of Fo Guang Shan, this monastery in the suburb of Nanjing is where Master Hsing Yun was ordained as a monk.

The monastery has got quite some relics. Besides touring the monastery, you could take a walk up the mountain to enjoy the scenery. It's not a difficult hike, but it does burn some calories.

The bus ride was approximately 1 hours to this place from Nanjing city. I think it's worth the time if you like to visit the suburb after spending too much time in the city.

This place have an abundance of maple trees so the best time to go is during the fall season to enjoy the autumn colors. We were fortunate that we visited Nanjing the first week of December and still was able to catch the beautiful colors.

The most important attraction is the Qi Xia temple and its related historical relics.

The Qi-Xia temple is at the foot of the mountain. If you have time, you can take a hike on the mountain. If your schedule is tight, ......no need.

“In late autumn, the maple leaves will turn their pretty colors”, said my friend. And of course, It will be very crowded and noisy.

This place is great! You can see the beautiful pond in the middle of the park, then you can also see the pagodas around pond! Yes! Many elders come here to relax and enjoy their life by a game of cards, chinese chess, or some other chit chats. Overall, you are going to love climbing and scaling the mountain.

The colors were gorgeous! We went there on early December and the trees were still glorious looking. I guess earlier during the fall you can get to see more trees full of colorful leaves, it wasn't that crowded and honestly we got there pretty late, we should have spent there the whole day is well worth it. Price is cheap (I think we paid 40 rmb for the entrance fee) and it wasn't crowded. If you go all the way to the top you can see the river that was awesome except for those trees that are blocking the view from the top (those are not the pretty ones) still the view is awesome and we got to see a wonderful sunset.

There is a lake in this sceneric spot and it is a must visit place if you plan to have a good time and a good swim. Entrance is around 30-40 RMB but if you visit after 6 pm its free. Here you will find people having a good time . Some choose to BBQ (Have to bring your own stuff). Some people like to have a night out so bringing a tent is also a good idea. Although there is an board warning people from swimming you can see many people swimming. The shore is not very deep. There is toilet at many places so a night out is not a bad idea. Be sure to take mosquito repellent though. You can see people playing game of card. You need to walk around 10 minute from the main gate to reach the lake.
There is also a temple ‘Qixia temple”. During autumn you can see the red leaves of maple trees.

Address: Qixia street No. 84, Qixia, Nanjing
Transportation: Take metro No. 2 to the Maqun stop and transfer to bus 138.

Arrived at 8:30AM and left at 12:45PM

+ Vast grounds if you enjoy trekking and exploring (good exercise!)
+ Glorious view from the top
++ Very fresh mountain air
++ Many scenic spots for taking photos

- A lot of uphill paths and stairs to climb (but not a bad thing if you enjoy the outdoor)
- Unclear signage at some parts

When coming to Qixia, try to remember that it's a temple on a mountain. If you have any more expectations than this, then you will surely be disappointed. The people there are friendly and if you go on weekdays there typically aren't many people there.
