Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s worth visiting— considering it’s free too... it’s very much Chinese based (which is great for those wanting or expecting that) but if you prefer more variety of a mixture of cultures or things around the world, then probably don’t add this to the top of your list if that is your intention and priority with a limited time frame.

Nonetheless, it was very clean and well kept. Quite spacious and plenty of things to see as it is separated into a few sectors.

We went to the museum in the evening and it was breath-taking! I love how everything is dual-language which makes it so much easier.

A place to visit to learn more of the unique history of Nanjing. The place is well kept and services are top-notch for all kind of travellers. Had a brief visit due to work commitment but glad I spend some time visiting the Museum.

Pay to go in and explore every open door and staircase. Exhibitions are mainly in the back left corner and there are many, many interconnecting rooms of treasures. One exhibition was on the top floor opening on to the roof, just extraordinary. Wonderful ancient featherweight silk garments with fine patterns woven into them and stunning gold jewellery in the last central hall. No cafe but there is a gift shop. Also found 2 machines dispensing coffee (Mr Coffee) but they only took payment using smartphone app. Beautiful place for a picnic.

A few amazing artistic works hidden away. Day we visited there weren't that many people around. Quiet little hideaway in middle of city bustle

the museum was very nice and interesting. they were fairly accomodating despite the fact that nobody there spoke a word of english, but they let us wander around freely and check out the historical items. i would recommend going to as many museums as possible if you are in china, but make sure you install a translate app on your phone so you can take a pic and it will translate text for you, its well worth using one of these.

Located within the Chaotian palace. This is one of the museum inside a museum. While not as fantastic as the National Museum in Beijing, this one is a treat to a history buff. Showcases historical artifacts from the beginning to the modern time. Good experience for free.

This Museum is actually housed in the Chaotian temple complex where there are a number of separate temples in a large ground. When I first got there at the entrance of the temple I thought I was in the wrong place, as I could not find the Museum sign anywhere. Entrance to the front yard of the complex is actually free. However, there is a fee of RMB 20 charged for the City museum.

I visited on a very hot day and the fee was well worth it as the inside of the museum was supercool. There were very few tourists inside most likely because of the heat, so it was very comfortable checking out the exhibits at a leisurely place, without pushing your way through the crowd. There museum building is spacious and the exhibits are well laid out. The history of the city from pre-historic time is told in a video format using computer generated graphics on a giant screen at the entrance. It was quite impressive. There are lots of relics related to the history of the city from different period or dynasties. Generally there is English translation relating to the exhibits. The lighting in this museum is excellent, as some other local museums have inadequate lighting, and one might easily end up with sore eyes afterwards. This is a place where one can easily linger for an hour or two even on a very hot day, just remember to bring bottled water.

The highlight for me in this museum is the contemporary history of the city in the last century, which is very well documented. My grandmother was born and raised in Nanjing. My grandfather was the owner of the largest Department store in the city in the 1930s. Although there is no surviving relative in the city, I was given the address of the Department store in Nanjing. Prior to visiting the museum, I actually went to the given address and found a large shopping mall with the same name. Obviously the old building has now been replaced with a modern shopping mall, but the name lives on. Unexpectedly, in the museum, I also came across an old photograph of the original department store in its heyday. It was an icon in the city at the time as it was the first large department store in the city. It has become part of the heritage of the city in the collective memory of its citizens a generation or two ago. Just seeing the building in the old photograph after visiting the site brings a feeling of my “connection” with this great city.

I visited Nanjing City Museum on holidays. The museum was crowded but it provided great exhibitions. I think that this museum is a must visit. It's near to the metro station and Nanjing university of agriculture.
