The Old Summer Palace might be worth a short visit if you plan to be nearby or you're particularly interested in palaces. Unfortunately, the buildings are mostly ruins spread out across the complex. The gardens are nice, but neither element compares to the Summer Palace.

As lotus flowers open early in the morning and close by mid-day, we arrived at the ticketing office a few minutes before the opening. It was my last day during my private tour. Outside the gate there were many kinds of lotus flowers cultivated in...More

It is a beautiful garden with lots of foliage and lake to enjoy the cool summer. A relaxing a walk in the park if you have the time. The audio guide provided some history about the garden. Unfortunately the direction is mostly in Chinese and...More

This is the best time to see the lotus in blossom and in Beijing there are several parks that you may enjoy in this season, however we spent a Sunday in the park that in English is called the old summer palace. You have to...More

As the site of a former imperial garden, Yuanmingyuan is a beautiful travel destination. You could easily spend hours walking around the palace grounds. Although there were less flowers on the main trail than I had hoped for, there were plenty of trees, bushes and...More

Lord Elgin certainly has much to answer for. To the Greeks their Marbles, to the the Chinese, their Summer Palace (now the Old Summer Palace). To heritage - shame. The dark side of Colonialism. The vast expanse of these ruins pays tribute to what was...More

A good 'no-tour needed' spot in BJ. Very easy to find as it's right next to a subway station(same name) and cheap entry is even cheaper if you show your student card(10RMB). You'll want to keep walking around, even when it's 38 degrees, as there's...More

This place was better than the summer palace. So much more to see and much nicer scenery. It’s deffo worth spending a day here.

The YuanmingYuan Subway exit is right beside the entrance to the old Summer Palace. It cost 25 RMB to get in. I was the only westerner there with about 100,000 Chinese. I was there 5 hours from about 11:30 – 4:30 p.m. The place was...More

If you only have time to go to one or other of the summer palace ruins complexes, then make it the New Summer Palace. However there's plenty to see here, too, and the Western side can be remarkably quiet, even in the peak season. A...More
