The current Neveh Shalom synagogue was built around 1843, succeeding a building dating back to 1723. The Portuguese Jewish community has even been present in Suriname since 1665, settling first inland in 1665 on the Jodensavanne. The synagogue looks immaculate and can be visited only on appointment according to our guide ... we did not get to go inside during our bicycle tour. Symbolic of Suriname’s successful multiculturalism, it is perched right next to the cities most significant mosque.

My girlfriend and I visited the synagogue during our trip to Paramaribo. I am not sure if there are usually visits allowed but the kind man let us in and showed us around. He was so enthusiastic and we really enjoyed hearing from him.
The synagogue itself is beautiful and it is filled with white sand to keep it cool. We got to visit the loft of the synagogue which was really cool. We were also shown the small building where people are baptised and also a small collection of historical items and antiques.
It is amazing how this place is situated right next to the mosque.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend seeing the synagogue if in Paramaribo.

Paramaribo's synagogue Neve Shalom (oasis of peace) is located next to a mosque and not far from churches, a symbol of the religious tolerance in this city. One wishes that it stays an oasis of peace, something which had not been the case with the probably most famous Neve Shalom Synagogue anywhere, the one in Istanbul, which has suffered two bad terrorist attacks.
When first passing by Paramaribo's synagogue, I found it closed, but then I saw a guided group approaching the iron gate and a man opening it for them. I profited and also entered, with the guardian telling me only not to forget to make a donation. I didn't follow the group, but went inside before them on my own.
What first surprised me was the sandy floor. Otherwise the synagogue had all the usual features: the Bimah, the Holy Ark, the Gallery for the attending women. Uncommon was only a pulpit as normally found in churches.
The whole building in a neoclassical style with four columns at the front is of wood, with everything painted over in white. It is aesthetically quite pleasing.

There were Jews in Suriname since the 17th century, when the Portuguese Inquisition drove them out of Brazil. In the early 18th century, land was purchased in Paramaribo for the construction of a synagogue.

For any Jewish person visiting Paramaribo, it is worth visiting that old Synagogue where the floor is covered with white sand.

Unique place. A synagogue that is jewishly and surinamese at the same time. Large, white and made in wood (as all the historicaa buildings of the old colonial Paramaribo).

We arrived without and appointment and rang the doorbell not really hoping to be successful in being able to come inside. The people working there could have not been more friendly. We where invited in shown around with one particular man who worked in the gardens explaining the surroundings and assisting us with any pictures we wanted to take. So helpful and friendly like all the people we came across in Paramaribo. It is very much worth the experience.

This synagogue was a really wonderful experience. The building is exceptional in beauty. The white sand floor is gorgeous and the torahs are outstanding. We had the tour by a Suriname native who moved to israel, but has returned for 2 years with his son to teach the remaining members how to read the torahs. The Jewish population is no longer active. I think his name was Stanley beck. We so enjoyed seeing this beautiful place.

This is a must see in Suriname.
The Synagogue, built entirely of wood is from the late 1800's
It is a wonderful stately building with a very interesting interior and a floor made of sand.
The religious items are beautiful as are the pews. There is also a religious bath that is 147 years old
