This so called open market , is a must see when visiting Paramaribo. It is a mixture of everything,... mixture of all the local races Suriname has, are displayed here. Mixture of daily fresh vegetables and fruits for fair prices. Also fresh fish for sale. All the different noises, colors, fragrances of fruits and so on. Just stand at the top level of the market and look down and take a deep breath.....unforgettable. At the back of the market there are some food stalls that sell delicious javanese food for fair prices. Enjoyment for the whole family.

This market is a must-see to experience the life of the locals. All manner of goods and other goods are offered for sale here. I don't speak the native language, but I was able to communicate with an occasional vendor who spoke some English. Reviewed by Miles Archer of Boca Raton, USA.

Of course one must visit this place. But Surinam sadly is economically so much sliding down, even the fish is not displayed on ice...
There is the North hall for Marrons: be there before 10.30 because the herbs then still smell fresh. The South hall is the main thing with a top floor for cheap clothes.
TIP 1: the surroundings are unsafe to be at after 17.00.
TIP 2: a lovely but simple and small local authentic lunch place in the back of South hall with 3 Java ladies, good food and especially great the so local atmosphere; you find them on the left at nr 764 and their back side wall is painted fresh green
TIP 3: drink their lovely Miracle Juice Pommeciter (pl.bottle enough for 2 pax; only 5 SRD; in resto's much more expensive and called Pomme de Cythere)

It is a joy to walk through this large Central Market hall.
The enormous veriety of foodstuffs, vegetables, fruits etc plus on the first floor the many stalls with clothing or other hardware items is well worth visiting.

Huge activity. A whirl of market merchants. Sections of vegetables, fresh fish, live crabs. live chickens, fruits, spices, too much to mention.

The Centrale Markt by the banks of the river Suriname is divided into several parts, not of all of them are interesting to the tourist, especially not the part where the Chinese, who have flooded Suriname with their shops, sell cheap plastic object and textiles. All in all it is a surprisingly big market.

The most unusual area is the so-called 'Witches Market', where Maroons (Africans from the countryside) are selling all kind of for us wierd items for medical purposes. Here photography is not allowed, but also in other parts market women might complain, when pictures are taken.

Our main interest had been the food part, seeing all kind of fish, fruit and vegetables, which are typical for the Guayanas and not easily encountered elsewhere. Some we had already tried in local restaurants like Madame Jeannette Peppers, Tayer Leaves, Yardlong Beans or Kandratiki, which the Dutch call 'Groene Vis' (Green Fish).

The Fish Market is closest to the river, where also the fisherboats are moored. On sale are various fresh and smoked fishes. At the market are also small food stalls, where typical Surinamese dishes are offered. In general I was surprised of hardly seeing any other foreigners here.

Such a market probably can be seen in almost all Caribean countries. This one has much more variety in products refelcting the many cultures living in Surinam

Faded glory. It is still lively and somewhat colourful, but nowhere near what you see on photos from a few years back. A visit should not take more than 15 minutes
