Small city, but interesting. We drove all the way from Paramaribo and have some time to visit this place while we were in Cayene. Very nice, exhibit items are properly placed which make the place become more interesting.

There's not a lot to do in Cayenne and so visiting the 2 museums in the city centre becomes quite an attractive option. This one has an interesting display on prisoners in the Isles du Salut upstairs. Unfortunately all the signs are in French but...More

It's central--just off the main square. The rooms upstairs give a better sense of history, including the penal colony system. Downstairs you're treated to pickled everything (two headed animals) and stuffed everything (unfortunate animals). A little sideshow-ish, but not a bad option on a slow...More

Midtown, an excellent museum, where you really get a good impression and knowledge of Cayenne's life, flora and fauna. Not pretentious, very good mantained, nice building and an exeptional good collection, specially of insects!! Must do!!
