At first I thought to statue was there to commemorate victims of the Lebanese civil war, but after some reading I understood that it symbolizes victory over Ottoman (Turkish) rule and honors Lebanese fighters who became martyrs after they were hanged. The bullet holes and...More

The four bronze figures represent freedom, hope and liberty. The statue was damaged during the civil war (1975-1990) and although restored, bullet holes...More

Passing by the Place Des Martyrs will always give, to members of my generation, the chill and will bring back memories of both the golden years and the war.

The statue has bullet holes from the Lebanese civil war and is near the Roman ruins. The place is marked by the traffic jams and frankly there isn't much to see.

The history of the statue is interesting, but to see this bullet ridden monument straddling the Green Line where you feel sadden by the events of the civil war and deeply hopeful that the peace with continue is very sobering.

I found this a fascinating structure as it is littered with bullet holes. The statute that commemorates the sacrifice which has been made, has itself been tormented over time. The square it sits in is of no great site other than it is opposite the...More
