- betteskidBoston, Massachusetts1,310 contributionsMosaics and a nice viewWe visited here during our trip to Jordan. The views from the site were quite nice and you could imagine that this site was where Moses first looked down on the promised land as recorded in the bible. The church there has lovely mosaics from ancient times that are very nice. We did not stay too long though as it was quite windy and cold the morning we happened to visit.Visited December 2022Written December 17, 2022
- ken jManalapan, New Jersey905 contributionsUnexpected high pointThis site was outstanding, and offers several things. First, the view is great, though it was not clear the day we were there. The church has a very famous huge animal mosaic, plus other mosaics. There is a small but interesting museum, plus a really nice serpent sculpture. Plus the cleanest bathrooms in Jordan! Don't miss this.Visited December 2022Written December 19, 2022
- BluebellplasnewyddCardiff, United Kingdom1,931 contributionsMoses and the promised landThe Franciscan church is at the top of the mountain reached along a beautiful and easy promenade. There are very good views everywhere and the place is well kept and spotless. The church itself is fairly new and architecturally interesting. Of course it has been built on the site of previous churches and there is a fantastic old mosaic presumable showing the animals that roamed the mountain in the past. At the bottom is the usual gift shop but there is nothing else in the area.Visited December 2022Written December 20, 2022

The area was clean and well maintained, it was not very crowded and had awesome views of Jordan and Israel. Definitely a must-do while near Amman!Visited November 2022Written January 17, 2023
- carnage99243 contributionsWorth a detour from MadabaFabulous view and wonderful mosaics. You can see right across to Israel and it is hard not to feel moved. There are many tour groups depending on your timing. Maybe go early or late.Visited February 2023Traveled soloWritten February 18, 2023
- Jadranka PLondon, United Kingdom717 contributionsMoses view of Promised landMount Nebo is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. It is quite busy place as it forms a part of Holy Land tour and it is considered as one of the most revered site in Jordan. It is also the presumed site of the prophet’s death and burial place. At the summit in the distance on a nice day Jericho could be seen and on the other side of this beautiful grounds, next to symbol you could see the Dead Sea.Visited November 2022Written February 27, 2023
- Stuart ARamsgate, United Kingdom246 contributionsPeaceful and SpiritualVery peaceful place, steeped in history. Allegedly the place where Moses saw the promised land and promptly died, handing over the reigns to Joshua. Lots of beautiful mosaics dating back thousands of years. Pope John Paul II visited in 2000 to pay homage and planted an olive tree. 3 JOD entrance fee, unfortunately not covered by the Jordan Pass.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 28, 2023
- geoff B518 contributionsMy wife was moved to be hereThis place was one of my wife's favourite places to visit in Jordan. The feeling she got when she looked out over the valley below to the Dead Sea imagining Moses standing up there looking over the promised land. The church and the mosaics were also very interesting. So glad we visited here.Visited February 2023Written March 2, 2023
- amymlongHouston, Texas210 contributionsVery well done museum/church - great views! This was an interesting site. They believe that this was the spot where Moses was able to view the promised land before his death. Not sure exactly how accurate it is that this was the exact spot, but it definitely seems plausible. The church, museum and facilities are very nicely done, super clean and informative. Many mosaics to enjoy and great views on a clear day.Visited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2023
- CasaRoscoeOttawa, Canada236 contributionsStunning VistasMount Nebo is many things to many people. For us it was the panoramic view and the historical significance. The new church onsite has several interesting mosaics, some dating back to the 6th Century, and viewing walkways allow one to see them to maximum effect. There is an admission fee (Mount Nero is not covered by the Jordan Pass). Expect to spend 30 minutes, unless one is participating in one of the masses or prayer sessions.Visited March 2023Written March 20, 2023

Up a hill is where Moses viewed the Promised Land. A special monument erected as one walks to the peak of the rise. A viewing platform to see the vast expanse of rolling hills.

Interesting & detailed ancient Christian mosaics. Viewpoint with a good panoramic view towards Israel, but unfortunately conditions were hazy when I visited. Not part of Jordan Pass, but entry cost is minimal. Obviously of great religious significance to some as the place where supposedly God showed Moses the Promised Land, which I can't help thinking was a historical prelude to today's current conflicts.

According to ancient texts, Moses saw the Land of Canaan from Mt Nebo. The Promised Land can be seen in a beautiful view over the Jordan Valley. Moses did not enter the Promised Land, his burial place is unknown.

Visiting while the troubles were heightened in Israel and the occupied territories was very poignant
Beautiful views of the Dead Sea, Jerusalem and Jericho
Remember to bring a scarf to cover bare legs to visit church as the mosaics are worth a visit

A very nice spot with a fantastic view over the valley and a church with beautiful mosaics that are very well presented. Some Christian folklore on top of that.

This site is very nicely preserved and the mosaics are beautiful. So many different ones on the floor and walls. Very clean ladies room and a quaint cafe at the entrance. A sprawling view of the area surrounding it from various spots.

Mount Nebo is a 15-minute drive from the city of Madaba. This holy site is believed to be the place where Moses climbed up to get a view of the Promised Land and died shortly thereafter. It offers spectacular panoramic views of the Dead Sea, the West Bank, the Jordan River and even Jerusalem on a clear day. It is located on the highest point of the mountains in the area, which fits the biblical description of it being on the top of a mountain opposite Jericho, so the authenticity of the site is undisputed. On the way to the viewing platform at the top of the hill – a comfortable walk on a paved path – you'll see a rock sculpture commemorating the visit of Pope John Paul II to Mount Nebo in 2000 and the olive tree he planted, the Rolling Stone of Abu Budd and the Brazen Serpent – a large bronze serpent cross - symbolising the legendary bronze serpent created by Moses in the desert and the cross on which Jesus was crucified – and which is now the symbol of Mount Nebo. Other attractions include Moses Memorial Church, which is adorned with some of Jordan's finest mosaics.

Hello dear and thank you for your question
Nebo is a lovely area and a rare view in the whole word
Mount Nebo is accessible also through local guided full day tours - there are plenty of them hosted on tripadvisors, and they are mostly good in comfy buses.
We also suggest you call the drivers numbers handed over by our fellows from the trip advisors community as having a local helps you also make non guided plans ;
Extra tips:
a journey to mount Nebo must also include other sightseings in the area so don't miss:
• swimming in the dead sea (even for non swimmers) and mudding your skin
• visiting the "maghtas" area (baptism site of JC)
• visiting maeen falls (among the hottest waters on teh whole planet)
Have a lovely journey

Is it possible to travel without a formal guide from Jerusalem to Mount Nebo ?
What is the best plan for doing that? Get a visa in advance? (We are going to Israel in September)
I have read that it might be best to get a one entry visa at Beit She’an / Sheikh Hussein.
Do you travel by taxi from the border to Mount Nebo?
Any suggestions?

I don't think the Jordanians will let an Israeli guide come over as they get along but don't really like each other. I have never been to Israel but I have heard that border crossings can take up to 3 hours each way, so plan for that. Once you are in Jordan it is really easy to drive to Mt Nebo. You can use google maps to route yourself in a rental car. And at Mt Nebo a guide is not necessary. Many if not all the exhibits are marked in English.
I would not take a taxi from the border. I would see about getting a rental car if possible. I wonder if you can drive a car over from Israel?

What is the dress code for this site?
michael o
Hong Kong, China191 contributions
No special attire required at Mount Nebo which is not so much a church as a museum but always advise tourists to dress conservatively in Jordan i.e. no bare shoulders or shorts. Jeans and tee shirts are fine. NB that Mount Nebo is very very cold due to the wind.
Is it not Mt Nebo where the Ark of the Covenant was hidden?

However, it is considered to be the place from where God showed Moses the promised land.
