Approaching this revered place, one is as much aware of conflict as anything else. The several religious groups who are entrusted with the care are obviously jockeying for control, and the place is chaotic, with the simple religious devotion taking second place to display and...More

With so many coming to this place the crowds can make it difficult to enjoy the experience of coming to this place....plan on a good hour to get through if it is crowded.

Very long queues to visit culminating in a grumpy monk herding people through quickly and with impatience. The building itself is spectacular, worth visiting for the architecture but not a warm spiritual experience.

The church is impressive. I was amazed by the faithful from around the globe. Too bad that the 6 denominations of christianity housed in this church can not get along. 400 years they have had to rely on a muslim family to open the church...More

We continued the stations of the cross from via delorosa to this church. The steps are steep and without good hand rails, and the lighting is often dim. There is a long wait for some areas. They continue to place anointing oil on the stone...More

What a stunning church. Went solo, without a tour, so I guess I didn't learn as much about the history. The tomb of Jesus Christ is here.

This is an incredibly important site in Jerusalem. We visited with a guide (Gila, Walkabout Israel) who spent a whole day with us explaining the history of the city. I would highly recommend having a guide. The church, according to legend, is the site of...More

Despite the mutilations of the centuries, the Holy Sepulchre remains a fascinating complex of structures and is of key importance for several phases of medieval architectural history. Imitations’ are being built all over Europe. Inside, its very elaborate, dark, and if you are sensitive to...More
