Overview
More
Located in Tophane, the Kilic Ali Pasa Mosque was commissioned by the Ottoman chief admiral, Kilic Ali Pasa, and built by the architect Sinan in 1580. Designed as an entire mosque-complex (Turkish: kulliye) there is the mosque itself, a madrassa, a tomb, a public fountain, a school and a hamam. The mosque’s original plans are one of the rare documents to survive intact from the 16th century and demonstrate how Sinan worked to have the mosque resemble the Hagia Sophia.

Another masterpiece from the late 1500s by the great Ottoman architect Sinan. No crowds and tour buses allow you to absorb its beauty at your own pace without distractions.

This is one of the most beautiful mosques in Istanbul. I visited it twice: first before the comprehensive renovation in 2011 and second last October. Honestly, I liked it much better before the renovation: wooden original handcrafts below the muezzin section are unfortunately gone after...More

Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy
is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at
the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most
historically significant area, it’s currently one of
the most happening parts of town as well. Here street
vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks
of the Horn where the views of major attractions
across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions,
