The Jemaa el-Fnaa is the epicenter of Marrakech. Whenever you are in the medina and lost, just ask where the Jemaa is. We visited over Christmas/New Year's and things were pleasantly calm. Food stalls and small restaurants were open, even though there was a curfew/no restaurant ban on. Go to the Jemaa and venture out in different directions. The medina is the heartbeat of the city where we wandered for 16 days, shopping, talking, having tea, and visiting the occasional museum that was open. Go!

Long ago this square used to be the execution point of the city. Hence it is still called Djemma el-F’nâ, which literally means the Assembly of the Dead. These days with the music, astrologers, magicians, snake charmers, dancers, acrobats, monkey handlers and persistent foot paddlers no spirits would dare to assemble here. This halqa or street theatre is UNESCO acclaimed madcap. During the day the square is somewhat calm but as the sunsets things start pumping up. The restaurants set outside stalls, the performers start entertaining and the crowds start converging. Just be careful of the pickpockets and the traditionally garbed performers who will pester you for tips.

How to describe something that is indescriptible. A unique place, a happy messy, joyful colorful combination of folkloric music shows, traditional dancers, street food stalls, cheap souvenir shops, snake charmers and fortune tellers, packed with tourists and locals. Don’t hesitate to wander and get lost in the narrow streets of the souk around the square: a feast for the senses. I think I actually found a word to describe this incredible place: exoticism!
