The title of this review is what I thought when I first saw the start of the trail. For those of you who are not familiar with the term, its a reference to the scene in the Lord of the Rings movie where the stairs...More
This is a strenuous, steep short hike with exposure. Not great for someone afraid of heights, I would say. My buddy and I decided that the climb back down from the pillboxes would be less fun than following the trail past the second pillbox which...More
This hike is a little out of the way and hard to find the entrance but is worth finding it. This one is more of a nature hike and has a little bit of loose gravel but wear proper running/workout shoes and you’ll be fine....More
This is the best little hike. I love going for sunrise. Don't try to hike it on a holiday weekend. I think they have banned parking in the neighborhood on a holiday weekend. You can still park at the beach and walk, it will just...More
We hiked this trail with our 2 young kids aged 7 and 10. The trail is very difficult at times and I was a bit scared that one of our kids was going to slip on a rock. I saw people trying to do this...More
We stayed in Kailua and woke up extremely early naturally. We were on Florida time - not quite adjusted to the time change yet. We had so much energy we decided to do a sunrise hike. We drove around hunting for parking near the trail...More
I went on the hike with 2 other adults 1 teen and a toddler. Once in the hike it's not as bad as it seems. For me it was harder coming down, than going up. But if you take your time and pay attention, it's...More
First, I want to mention that if this hike is considered a "beginner" hike... then I'm reaaaaally interested in knowing what an "advanced" hike is. This isnt a casual hike through the woods with maintained trails and paths. This is a hike up a mountain...More
We did this early in the morning but unfortunately due to some rain the first 5/10 mins uphill was very muddy and very slippery! So wear
Old clothes and shoes. After that it was all good but all

I got into hiking 2 years ago and have been looking forward to doing the Pillbox hike at sunrise since I began planning my trip to the island.

It’s kind of tough in parts but I never felt unsafe and I hiked it in flip flops and a swimsuit due to my sis-in-law deciding last minute we were doing that instead of the beach. It wasn’t ideal but it wasn’t terrible. It... More
It’s kind of tough in parts but I never felt unsafe and I hiked it in flip flops and a swimsuit due to my sis-in-law deciding last minute we were doing that instead of the beach. It wasn’t ideal but it wasn’t terrible. It was also very windy that day, my husband had his hat blown off so make sure if it’s windy you have everything attached well! We also had an 8, 11 and 12 year old with us and my mom-in-law who is in her 60’s and everyone did ok. Wear sunscreen, good shoes and take a backpack with water (you’ll want both hands free to climb at times) and a camera, the view is amazing!!
