We took a boat ride up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto (which I had done many years before). The boat trip was OK (hula dancers and live ukelele music on board, a bit of history commentary, etc). The grotto itself (lava-rock cave) is...More

Decided to paddleboard up the Wailua river to Fern Grotto while in Kauai in June 2018. The docking area isn't very good to get into or out of so it was challenging to cross over the floating driftwood with the board. Also, you have to...More

We loved Smith's Fern Grotto tour! You take a river boat up the Wailua River while listening to some history and then get off the boat and walk through the rainforest to the Fern Grotto. There is some Hawaiian music played and dancing and lots...More

Very disappointed. There was pretty much nothing to see on the extremely short boat ride and the walk up a planked path to the grotto was a waste of time. The hula dance and Hawaiian music were okay but definitely NOT worth what we paid...More

The Smith Fern Grotto Tour was entertaining and educational. Everyone seemed to enjoy the serenade of Hawaiian music on the trip to the grotto as well as the hula lesson! We were disappointed that visitors are no longer allowed to enter the cave but the...More

My wife is a big Elvis Fan. SO when we went to Hawaii, of course, we made plans for the Fern Grotto. What a disappointment for my wife. While she understood that times and places change, if they had told us that the Grotto had...More

This is a fun slow ride up to Fern Gully. Almost more fun watching the paddle boarder's fall off their boards as our wake hit them, although it wasn't much of a wake we made. The entertainers engage everyone to get up and learn a...More

This is a very low key, and relatively inexpensive activity- for Kauai. It is pretty going up the river, but the ferns on the wall of the cliff are a little underwhelming. But this is the only way to see some nice scenery so if...More

The staff here is fabulous! They are so friendly and talented. They all sing, dance and know their history of the area. The grotto itself isn't that awe-inspiring, but it is something to see. It is a good backdrop for photos, and they do some...More

The setting is beautiful and the river ride to the Fern Grotto was pleasant. It was interesting to watch the kayaks rowing up the river since the river ride was about 30 minutes. We were at the Grotto several years ago and at that time...More

We started slightly up river at Kamokila Hawaiian village. From there, it was maybe ten minutes. If you start at the other kayak rental places at the mouth of the river, it will take you longer. There isn't much to see in... More
