    Amazing
Wow what an incredible place. We booked a tour guide by email as we didn't want to risk noone being available as this was so worth it. Our guide was so knowledgeable and friendly. Shared lots of his knowledge about the plants and the Mayan culture. Take plenty of water as it hot and humid- we refilled our bottles when we finished the guided walk as you can then use the map and guide book to continue walking round. There is so much to see and such great information in the guide book. We sat in the hide for a while and watched the wildlife which gave us a chance to cool down as well as seeing the birds - woodpeckers, hummingbirds and much more. Next time we will bring our wildlife identifier book! An absolutely brilliant way to spend a morning. You need to come here to learn about Belize, Maya culture, plants and environmental efforts.

    Large impressive collection of plants
You can take a guided tour or walk around on your own like we did with the guide book that provides information about each of the plants. It would be of interest to plant lovers and we also saw some interesting birds. I think there are some challenges with funding to address aging infrastructure and hurricane damage but they manage to provide a worthwhile and educational experience that is important to support. The staff are very pleasant and we had a really enjoyable visit.

    The Medicine Tour Was Fantastic!
We loved it here and highly recommend visiting the Belize Botanical Gardens! The dirt road up has been improved, and so the drive is easily doable in the dry season. We made it there fine in a standard rental car, but an SUV would be preferred. In the wet season, you might want to call ahead for recommendations on the drive, and will probably need something better suited for the roads than a regular car. They have a shuttle service for 15 bz per person that leaves from San Ignacio twice a day and a booth in the San Ignacio Market where you can chat with them and book it. If you’re doing the tea tour you’ll need to book in advance so that they have enough time to prepare. We did the medicine tour with Rudy. Rudy was a fantastic guide and we not only learn about the medicinal uses of different plants but the cultural significance, history, as well as current conflicts around certain plants. He is a brilliant storyteller and very passionate about conservation. We got to smell, taste, and connect with lots of different plants that we then continued to see during our stay in Belize. Do bring snacks and water!

Beautiful place to explore plants and birds! The staff was very friendly and helpful. We spent about an hour here but could have stayed all morning if we had the time. Thanks for a lovely experience!

The gardens and trails are well maintained. The horse is not. I will be thinking about the malnourished, sickly horse for the rest of my vacation and beyond. The poor beast was standing under the archway along the trail near the orchid house, not moving. You can see its bones. Has anyone fed this poor thing lately? And yes, as others have mentioned, there are friendly dogs on site; one accompanied us for the last half of our walk and all the way to our cabin, where I gave him some water since all the water bowls at the gardens were bone dry and dirty. The gardens were beautiful, but be prepared to bear witness to a lower standard of animal care that leaves you feeling sad.

The story of how this farm came about is really neat. We decided to do the guided medicine tour. Our guide, Harry, was very proud to share the ways of the bush Doctor. He had many fascinating personal stories as well as historical information to share for the use of natural medicine. It was a slow easy walk for about 1.5 hrs looking, smelling, tasting, and touching what Mother Nature has to offer. They had a few farm dogs that would walk with us a bit and then run off to lounge is the shade. They also have an old retired horse that roams the property. When we finished the guided medicine tour we decided to continue with a self guided botanical walk. They provide you with a map showing all the marked plants and a very detailed booklet that gives brief info of each marked item. Overall relaxing and pleasant stroll through the gardens. Beautiful property! Great way to spend a few relaxing hours.

The gardens are a great way to get out of town and into some nature. We chose the self-guided tour, at $15 Belize per person. They give you laminated map and book with details on all the plans (which are numbered as you walk the grounds). The medicine trail was especially great, as was watching the toucans and butterflies. Also, best directional sign ever (see pics :)). The guided tour would go into more detail (our shuttle mates chose this, and said the guide did some demos of plants used for healing and/or pigment, etc), but self-guided allowed us to cover more ground. Bring your own water and snacks. I recommend the garden shuttle - it leaves from the market a few times a day. A reservation for the shuttle is good - what we took was a passenger van, and 6 of us visitors filled it up (they gave a ride to some of the garden staff on the return trip).

This was one of our favorite experiences in Belize. We got the guided medicinal tour and tea tasting.
We arrived for our 1:00 tour and were promptly introduced to our guide, Harry.
Harry took us through the orchid house and then proceeded to take us on a short hike through the property.
What made this tour special was Harry. He was very humble and affable. More often than not with every new plant he introduced, he would tell a story of how it affected either he or his family. He told us stories of growing up and using these plants in various ways to help buy candy or entertain himself. He told us stories of them helping his wife get pregnant and told us how being raised with Mayan beliefs shaped his world view and how he interacts with everyone and everything.

We opted to have the tea tasting as well. It’s not at all what we expected but was absolutely wonderful. He brought us to a table under a canopy of vines to a very pleasant table setting for two. It had two pots of tea, some sweeteners and some snacks. He explained what the teas were and what they were good for. My wife and I both weren’t feeling too well. I had a headache that I’d had for a couple of days and my wife had a sore throat and cough. The tea took away my headache better and quicker than any medicine I’d ever taken.

This place is amazing in so many ways. It wouldn’t be the same without Harry though.

Make time to see this place.
Spend the money and get the tour.
It was well worth the 2 hour drive from Belize city.

Thank you Harry and team!
