The Department of Agriculture actually occupies three buildings in the area: the main Administration Building, the USDA Forest Service "Auditor's Building," and the massive South Building, which occupies one entire block. There isn't much to note about the USDA buildings, except if you're looking for a good lunch at a very reasonable price. The USDA cafeteria (open to the public) is great!

The ultimate cafeteria experience! I never would’ve known about this hidden jewel. But it was recommended by a friend. There is a cafeteria in the United States department of agriculture. It is absolutely amazing! Soup bar. Salad bar. Hot food cooked to order. Hot food bar. Desserts. And incredible array of food using items crying throughout the United States. The food was absolutely phenomenal. And the price was amazing. Skip the high cost restaurants while you’re in Washington and take advantage of this hidden jewel. They even had a chili competition the day we were there. And gave out recipes.

I was searching blogs for affordable, good food near The Mall after an expensive and bland museum meal. Two or three blogs mentioned the Dept of Agriculture cafeteria, and I thought it sounded strange but we decided to try it the next day. What a great surprise! They have an international hot bar, American hot bar, cold fruits and desserts, amazing salads (about 16 different varieties— barley, Greek, tofu salad—you name it). Fountain drinks are cheap, about $1.50. Grill, sushi, Italian, Mexican bowls, more available around the perimeter. My hungry teens got nearly 2#!! but ate it all, and for $15, was still a deal. The rest of us got about 1#, so we came out around $8. Great choices, friendly staff. We could have eaten here every day..

As with many of the buildings in Washington, DC, the architecture is quite overwhelming. But we did not go inside; you can get a picture in front of the building.

I saw a sign for lunch at the Department of Agriculture. I thought that it would be a healthy lunch--fresh fruit, veggies, and meats. Wrong! A great buffet and very inexpensive, but also very fried and beige in color. Worth the walk to find the Independence Ave entrance...to say that I had lunch there. Had to show ID and pass through a metal detector-for lunch!

Different tastes for different people. While on a week vacation in DC, we ate here two days. We had to go through security check like every other building. The cafeteria has islands of different foods. There’s a soup bar. A sushi bar. A cold salad and fruit bar. And a double hot bar. You pay by the weight. I put everything in the same plate cold and hot. Soup and sushi separately. We came twice as the food was so good.

When on the National Mall, and looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, no one does it better than the Department of Agriculture Cafeteria. Pretty standard cafeteria setting, business folk and employees, but the food it fresh and interesting and a huge variety. Open the the public and a great place to grab a bite before heading to the next museum!

In a city must see attractions this is easily a skip. If you happen to be walking by while on your way to other attractions look up as you walk but don't waste precious DC time trying to see this.

Unless you have ties with the Department of Agriculture, there is no need to go inside the building because it is another "government building. However, it is worth a few minutes of photos while you are at the National Mall visiting other museums. The Department of Agriculture building comprises with the the main building (south wing and is know as Jamie L. Whitten Building which covers the whole block of Constitution Ave between 12-14 street. The Beaux-Arts Style building was registered as National Historic place. Worth selfie when in the area.

Read about this in travel books and some blogs. If you are visiting Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Holocaust Museum or Smithsonian Castle, have lunch here. Visitors without USDA ID must go to Wing 3, show ID and pass though security. Breakfast and lunch are served here and you pay by the pound. Lots of choices - Japanese, Chinese, American, Mexican, Italian, Vegetarian etc. Family of 3, plates full and two drinks costs us $25. Very inexpensive compared to museum cafes. Highly recommended!
