    You won't regret coming here
Smithsonian American Art Museum is a good art lover destination in Washington D.C. It is just a few blocks away from the National Mall, and its content stands as a testament to the rich artistic heritage of America. As you step inside, you'll be captivated by the diverse collection of American art, showcasing historical and modern art pieces. What makes this experience even more enticing is that the museum is conveniently connected to the National Portrait Gallery, offering a two-in-one artistic experience. Some of the portraits on display are both intriguing and abstract, providing a unique perspective on the subjects they depict. Whether you're an art lover or simply looking to explore the cultural gems of D.C., the Smithsonian American Art Museum should be on your list. You can easily spend an entire day here, immersing yourself in the beauty and creativity that surrounds you. And if you need a moment of rest, the museum boasts a charming courtyard where you can unwind and recharge. It was enchanting experience which I warmly recommend.

    Museum Visit
My husband and I went to the combined American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery while in Washington, DC on a Saturday afternoon. There was a lot of interesting artwork, though, also some that made us question why it's in an art museum. This combined museum is part of the Smithsonian and is free. It features a gift shop and a beautiful courtyard.

Awesome visit even if not the most essential Smithsonian venue
American art is as diverse as the huge and varied land and history it comes from, and this museum really helps give the visitor a taste of that breadth. Certainly not everything will be to everyone's taste, but there is something for everyone. Go in, dwell on what catches your eye, and skip the rest and you should have a fine visit.

    Excellent museum
The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) are both housed in the old Patent Office building. In SAAM, there were many interesting exhibits, both permanent and temporary. The exhibits give a broad picture of American art from the colonial period until the 21st century.

This museum was pretty average. Lots of artwork to see and some cool pieces. But I thought a lot of the art was poor.

It's free and you can just walk in. I'd skip unless there's nothing else you can do. It's open a bit later compared to other Smithsonian museums which is good.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum shares its building with the National Portrait Gallery. I enjoyed the Portrait Gallery more -- probably because I am more interested in history than art and was able to learn more from the portraits. The American Art museum is well laid out and is small enough to be very doable in a few hours. Free to enter. Cafeteria in the middle of the building is very pleasant.

We spent a bit of time here and enjoyed some of the museum - the American Presidents (including the Barack Obama painting), the Folk Art, and the various portraits. The large Albert Bierstadt painting is beautiful. It was not crowded on the day we were there, which was nice, and the cost is free.

We visited the National Protrait Gallery within this impressive musuem, but will return to see the rest of its treasures.
We took our time with the only full collection outside the White House of portraits of all U.S. Presidents, reading the notes next to each painting. Worth a visit for the art of portraiture alone (artists include Norman Rockwell, Robert Anderson, Margaret Lindsay Williams, Kehinde Wiley), it was a broad learning experience for three generations visiting together.
