PROS
• Impressive statue of the general and president on his horse
• Great Location exactly at the Reflecting Pool
• Directly in front of the Capitol Building
• Great detail in its depiction of him
• Two more statues - one on each side- showing Civil War battles
• Bas- relief showing more struggles of war
• Symbolic to have the general who led the war effort to preserve the Union at one end of the National Mall and the President who presided over its unification- Lincoln- at the other end
CONS
Not much written printed or engraved explanation of what this is, who it is and what it represents- its significance and its Central location
“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… while exploring Capitol Hill. I was thrilled to discover these statues and took many photos, which I hope that you will find “helpful.”
TIP
Of course you should go and see this.

This is just one of the many things to see while your walking around DC. It's well worth a look as you pass it by on the way to another famous building.

We only stopped for 10 minutes on our bus tour on our way to the Capital. It is a large statue and great for history buffs

In a city filled with monuments and memorials, it is important to pick the ones you are the most interested in seeing. The General Grant memorial quite a fitting tribute to the man who helped save the Union, who helped put an end to the bloody war and who (in ending the war) played a large part in ending slavery in the United States. He is surrounded by lions and immediately outside the capitol building.

As memorials for, its OK. It’s a shame the pond was drained when we were there. Great views of the US Capitol and back towards the Washington Monument.

The statue itself is very impressive and the location provides magnificent views of the Capitol. At the time of writing the reflection pool was empty which was disappointing. However I would recommend visiting for some great photo opportunities.

Do you know about the history of statues when people are in horseback? Look it up! The kids found it interesting to learn about the position of the horse’s legs as it relates to how the rider may have passed.

Standing close by United States Capitol, the sculpture of President Ulysses Grant stands facing the Lincoln Memorial. He was a general during the Civil War and he is an important figure in the history of United States. Washington D.C. as the capital, has the representation of the figures and moments that helped shape this country. It is really a place to visit and enjoy.

PROS: beautiful and awe-inspiring statues; great photo ops for both the Capitol (near) and the Washington Monument. Hard to miss if you are going to the Capitol Building.
CONS: construction by the pool facing the statues.

Planning a trip to DC, and want to see this Memorial. Google says that the "Hours Of Operation" are from 10AM - 1PM, and 2PM - 5PM. Is this behind a security screening? I though visitors would have access 24/7.

Hi, Barry. What would you like to know about this attraction? Is the Ulysees S Grant Memorial still covered in Scafolding?
Written September 11, 2018
When we were there in September 2016, everything immediately west of the Capitol which includes the Grant memorial ( there are several different bronze statues that are part of that memorial), was covered up with tarps and scaffolding and barricaded off. The Washington monument had just been closed and under repair as well, we had tickets for that. We returned in July 2018 and everything at Grants memorial had been completed, it is beautiful and a must see location, by the way, the Washington monument is still closed and under repair.
