This was a very disappointing experience. We expected much more than a very large body of water. We arrived at the Okeechobee park and found just a pier and some public bathrooms. That’s it!
I kept thinking we were missing something so we asked some of the locals and they could not point us to anything we could go to to see more of the lake.
We were just passing through from a much longer trip to Georgia so we just went to dinner and back to the hotel to sleep and go home.
I have heard there is good fishing at the lake but if that is not your thing, there is not much else here that we could find.
Not a repeat.

We took a day trip up to see the lake this past weekend. But after driving the south half of the lake you learn that the lake is elevated (like two stories higher than the road!) So we drove for hours & did not even see water! It’s like seeing a large earthen dam for miles with no access. You learn that the lake is about watering the crops south of the lake & not about recreation. If you are going to fish then pre-book your guide because we didn’t see any guide services in any of the towns. I wouldn’t attempt without a guide to show you how to access the lake. Lastly, around the lake are lots of old fashion companies with smoke stacks churning smoke which it the only real scenery in the south part of the lake. You have been warned.

I visited Lake Okeechobee specifically so I could walk some of the Herbert Hoover Dike, which surrounds the lake and in certain parts gives you a perfect view of the lake and the gators lazily floating in it. There are parts of the dike that are under construction by the Army Corps of Engineers, so you can’t walk the whole thing at the moment, but I picked out certain sections to walk. I highly recommend checking out the pier in Okeechobee that extends out into the lake. My favorite places to walk on the dike were near the Pahokee Marina because you can actually walk down closer to the water and get a much better view of the wildlife just offshore, and the Port Mayaca Lock and Dam which has a lovely unobstructed view of the lake.

Great fishing trip! Me and my friend caught a personal best bass. We caught more fish in 2 days than we previously did in our entire lives. Thanks to Mike for hooking us up with captain Ryan and Captain Randy

The surrounding land, effects the lake with and overabundance of nutrients. The smaller fish and a hazard to the native wildlife and water quality.

We visited Lake Okeechobee while in Okeechobee FL the lake is 40 miles long and 30 miles wide. A lot of plant life in the water around the shores that extended pretty far out into the lake where we were At by the pier. The pier is a nice viewing point to see the lake and a few gators.

Not much to do or see the lake. A huge dike/ berm has been built around the entire lake so as to prevent overflow of lake (that would cause flooding). Only a few locations where you can actually view the lake. Surrounding areas do give you that sense of early Florida history. Nearby Seminole Reservation is worthy.

Wow! Grande lake, beautiful, tranquil waters full of species and.. alligators! First time we have seen alligators in their natural habitat. Very nice pier for up-close photos of these animals and enjoying the enormous size of the lake.

This is a special place and makes such a change from the tourist commercialism of the east and west coasts. The lake is huge, peaceful and beautiful and hosts a great range of wildlife. At Okeechobee own itself there is a pier which is a great viewing spot. We went out both evening and early morning and saw a large alligator, a huge copperhead snake and a variety of birds including cranes, a spoonbill, limpkins, swamp hens, sanderlings, hawks & kites. It’s possible to walk or cycle right around the lake if you wish and as you drive around the lake there are various places with brown signs for the “Okeechobee Scenic Trail” where you an pull in to get access. If you’re just making random stops these pull in areas work with varying degrees of success and it’s very much trial and error as to what you get when you stop by. We made 4 or 5 stops and managed to see another 3 alligators, a couple of short tailed hawks soaring around and a large white headed bird of prey (osprey??) sitting on a post and tearing in to something he had clearly just caught. Whether you manage to bag the wildlife or not the lake is a wonderfully peaceful and beautiful place and worthy of some significant time in your itinerary.

Hi,
I'm planning a fishing trip in late July (2015) for my dad. He has never left the Midwest and is headed to see my first home here in Florida. He is a highly skilled fisherman in Iowa/Missouri freshwater rivers and has always dreamed of catching bass at Lake Okeechobee.
I'm looking for reviews and opinions for a fishing guide service. My dad can cast his own line and is a highly proficient angler. Just need someone professional and knowledgeable with a boat, to help in in the area.
I'd appreciate any insight or advice, from those of you who have fished the area before.
Thanks!
Crystal
