- LolaDeVys16 contributionsAkaroa’s highlight: a garden of smiles.A fabulous and unique art garden with whimsical surprises around every corner. Well named The Happiest Garden. Also serves the prettiest Devonshire tea I’ve ever seen, with fresh flowers. Stunning views but steep slope and many steps, so limited access for people with disability.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 4, 2023
- GngrpeechHomer, Alaska115 contributionsBeautiful colors and TexturesAmazing colors and textures. I felt like I was inside Alice in Wonderland. The artist lives here and also does her own gardening. Disappointed there is no gift shop. Also when I purchased a delicious cold lemon ginger drink at the end of my visit, it was served in glassware and there is zero provision for paper cups or anything to take with you. Since weren’t in a hurry, I was able to sit in the garden and enjoy. However, it would be a kindness if there were signage to the effect that there is no provision to takeaway or ‘to go’.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten December 1, 2023
- Gill OAscot, United Kingdom664 contributionsWell worth a visitWe’ve been before but this time brought my daughter, her husband and their young family. A great hit! So completely different. Very cleverly put together and a pleasure to explore. Would highly recommend for an hour or so when visiting Akaroa. Little tea room also lovely and the cakes were delicious!Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 30, 2023
- CoastfansNew Zealand220 contributionsWorth every penny - unlike anything we've ever seen.A must for anyone who loves gardens, creativity and hard work. Gaudy, gorgeous, intricate, meticulously presented and shimmering under a hot blue summer sky, there was far too much to absorb in a single visit but we both felt $25 was a fair price for what we experienced. As others have noted, the driveway up to the entrance is steep; the garden itself is terraced into the side of a steep hill and there are steps galore connecting all the different tableaux and layers. It was surprisingly busy on a Thursday morning but not so crowded that you couldn't find a little private space here and there to enjoy all the micro detail. The key is to loiter - most people seem to trot thru quite quickly, but the slower you go the more you see and enjoy. And the views of course are jaw droppingly beautiful! Thanks, Josie - it was a highlight of our 4 day stay in Akaroa.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 10, 2024
- Allison38 contributionsQuirky, charming and definitely worth a visitDelightful sculptures in a beautiful garden setting. This was so much more that expected and had it not been an extremely hot day we would have spent much longer here. The figures are charming and the video explaining the processes of informative. This is our third visit to Akaroa but only first to the garden.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 14, 2024
- foxyhiltonEncinitas, California7 contributionsMagical Visit to a World of ImaginationA visit to the Giant's House in Akaroa is highly recommended for adults and children alike. It is a place of imagination and whimsy, sure to bring a smile to your face. The mosaic figures and pathways are stunningly beautiful in their artistry. It is hard to think that one person could have created this experience. In a place where natural beautify abounds, the Giant's House finds its place in bringing joy to any who is fortunate enough to visit.Visited January 2024Traveled soloWritten February 20, 2024
- SpiderNew Zealand3 contributionsAmazing sculpture parkAmazing place. The work to do all the figures etc is mind blowing. The grand historic looking house looks interesting but you can't go inside which was a big disappointment as the websites gave the inpression it was part of the experience. Especially as it is called The Giants House. Maybe a change of name to reflect the sculptures would be more appropriate. Cafe food and coffee is expensive. $10 for a large coffee.??? Probably a $25 adult entry would be more in keeping with the house off limits.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 16, 2024

Travelled from Australia to New Zealand on the Golden Princess (8th to 25th January 2020) and this tour 'WAS" to be the highlight of my port visit to Akaroa.
Lady at the front counter was rude, and advised us to go look around - without any directions. She seems annoyed that ANOTHER cruise tour had arrived.
Once closer to the actual house - another lady initially told us we were forbidden to enter until she realised we were part of the Princess Cruises Tour Group. Lady then allowed us to enter but provided NO HISTORY OR INFORMATION basically just told us don't touch anything and it was a private residence. Would have loved to known more about the artist and the meanings behind the art.
Outside the place was overcrowded, you couldn't get to fully see anything, let alone take a picture of the art. All path ways were crowded with people and you spent ages waiting to see anything.

I absolutely loved this garden and the colour, obvious passion that has been put into this labour of love.
The lovely house is located a short somewhat steep walk from the village up a steep driveway so you need to be physically fit to get there but no mountaineer.
The hours are limited so check opening hours and there is a nominal $20 entrance fee.
The garden is so vibrant both the flowers and the mosaics that you dont know where to look first.
The house itself is a private residence and looks amazing too.
Took so many photos and appreciate the work involved.
Thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

Got to the artist’s garden about 3:40 and was told It closed at 4. Was rushed through as it closed at 4 so we had to whizz through. It was $60 for our family of five which is pricey as others have stated but the craft that the artist has used on all her statues and paths in the garden is truly incredible. The house is also amazing and a nice way to while away an afternoon. Should be noted that the garden is up a very steep driveway and much of the garden is also on a hillside so people going need to be aware of the need to do stairs.

Stunning mosaic works of art woven into a garden tapestry.
There’s a steep walkway and though there’s a drop off point close to the top entry but deep stairs dominate the walkways so this is not recommended for those with mobility difficulties and I also would not recommend it for young families - children will consider the bright art pieces to be playground equipment and it would be a trial for parents to keep them off the statues and out of the water.
Check your foot gear, especially in wet weather as the mosaic work could be quite slippery.
This would be appealing to any person who finds art, gardens, creativity or beauty attractive.

It is a bit pricey to go in, $50 for two adults and a 4 year old.
However it is quite spectacular, interesting, attractive and enjoyable to walk around exploring the works of art. It reminds me of Antoni Gaudí’s work.
It is up a very steep drive. No parking at the top.
The garden is filled with sculptures that the artist has created with mosaic tiles. She lives there onsite.
The garden itself is quite steep too. Wouldn’t recommend it to push chairs or wheelchairs sorry.
I had my very inquisitive two year old with us and it was a bit hectic with her, full anxiety levels as she wanted to touch everything. And upon entry you are told not to touch or sit on anything. Just a heads up!
Lovely thing to do for half an hour or so.

Lovely gardens, loved the ceramic piano on the front lawn of a beautiful old home. Some of the ceramic subjects are a little odd-looking but on the whole the colours and patterns are amazing. There are plenty of places to sit and just look around. It's expensive at $22.50 and I know several people who weren't prepared to pay this - they missed a great experience but the decision is understandable.

Superbly located at the top of the street overlooking harbour and hills this hidden gem is fun and will brighten your day. Walked from town up the hill which was enjoyable, passing the studio of New Zealand artist Nancy Tichborne on the way (unfortunately it was closed). Loved the colours and ideas created by Josie who is clearly blessed with creativity in abundance. Personally we felt $20 was a tad steep and felt $15 p/p may be more appropriate.

This house is at the top of a steep, long hill and the stairs to get into the garden are very, very steep. The reward is a garden of total delight - once you are past the grumpy lady on the desk (my reason for the low mark). Try and go late in the afternoon, when the crowds have gone - and once you get over the rude welcome I’m sure you will enjoy the quirky and quite bonkers art.

Great look around. Worth the walk from town.
Absolute electric use of colors and materials.
Would be skeptical of a visit on a wet day, Noelene will not get her walking frame between half the attractions but a good view can be experienced from the lower garden

Arriving by tendered cruise ship Nov 3/19. Do you know how far a walk it is from the wharf to the Giant's House? Will the gardens be in bloom this time of year? Is there still a free shuttle service. And how long is the average tour within the Giant's House property? Thanks
Written July 29, 2019
It can be walked, we are in our sixties and made it, we took a couple of short rests but it can be done, once into town and that is easy from the jetty, it is up hill to the giants house, the last bit quite steep, have water and good walking shoes, it is quite a scenic walk.

Can you please tell me how far apart is ko tane garden and giant house please and thank you
Written January 12, 2019
The Garden of Tane and the Giants House are about 30 - 40 minutes walking time apart.
To go to the Giants House you turn left from the jetty and head through the village and take a right turn up the hill - about 25 minutes. Look at the map they will give you to see the street you take.
The Garden of Tane is in the other direction from the jetty exit so depending on how much time you have you may need to choose between the two.

Hi Josie, we will be in Akaroa in december 2017 by Cruise ship. I use a small mobility scooter, with small wheels. Would it be possible for me to visit the garden and house? I can walk short distances.
Written February 5, 2017
Hello Francis,
First of all sorry this response is so late, just saw your question.
Its is possible for you to come to the garden, but you will probably not be able to access the top parts of the garden, but you will be able to see most of it from the bottom lawn. The driveway is quite steep, not sure if the scooter would be able to come up it. But, if it can the person on the entrance will be able to open the driveway gate for you, so no steeps to access the bottom portion of the garden. Hope to see you at The Giants House and I hope this information helps.
Kind Regards
Josie

There are pictures on my website thegiantshouse
