This is a small museum but very well put together and the stories of the founding of this small community are very interesting indeed. You will also have free entry to the Court house of which half is given up to a short film on the history of the community and the other half is as the court house used to be. In addition there is the two room cottage, the original structure from the initial period.
Well put together and extremely interesting, you will not be disappointed.

Even though some areas were closed due to renovations, our visit was informative, entertaining and somewhat of a surprise.I thought this would be the usual small town museum, just an amateurish collection of local trivia. But NO, very well presented, profesionally designed, tottally gave me an insight into the lives of the early settlers. The staff were also helpful and very pleasant. Definitely going back to hopefully see the rest of this wee gem of Akaroa history. NB, take some cash with you, the visit is free, but donations are welcomed, and you will feel like doing so.

My granddaughter and I found this well located museum amongst the main shopping area in akaroa and found it to be the perfect place to spend an hour while in this delightful town. Akaroa was the site of an 1840 French settlement so has a unique pioneer history. It also has a fascinating geological past as it is the crater of an ancient volcano but this aspect was completely missing which was disappointing. My granddaughter enjoyed playing with the felt board in the children's room.

We stopped by here while strolling through Akaroa. There were no entrance fees. The building within which it was housed and the old courthouse next to it are a test of time on their own. Very informative visit of the history the local area and the running videos of the history of the area are well worth the time.

Brilliant museum. Have been twice, impressed each time. Good thing to do if you have a day of wet weather as it is all indoors. Great location right in the main street. Free entry but they do like a gold coin donation.

Well worth a visit. A donation is required for entry. Included is the old courthouse building (where you can watch an informative doco on Banks Peninsula) and an original settler's cottage (unrestored). Museum is well laid out with lots of interesting exhibits and information.

Its no wonder this museum is the smartest regional one in the land. Learning about different phases of peninsulas settlement and fascinating natural and industrial history. Donation box merits a note not merely a coin.

As a local museum goes, this is very, very good. As an admirer of Ernest Shackleton's expeditions, I loved it for the information on Frank Worsley, so it was a 5 for me, but would have been a 4 even without that tie. It gives great insight into the history of a unique area. Why are so many of the streets "Rue" this or that? You'll understand if you go to this museum.

A great and inexpensive way to pass a few hours. The highlight for us was the Shackleton exhibition as the Captain of his ship was a local man.
