This is an Aboriginal Gallery or Indigeneous Gallery as they prefer to be called now. It is a pity that it does not open until 10-00AM on weekdays and 12-00PM on wekends as it was closed when I went to it

Japingka Gallery in Fremantle's historic High Street has been there for over two decades. It displays Aboriginal art from all over Australia on two levels of the heritage building and is a must visit for those interested in art and indigenous history and culture.
Staff is very knowledgable about Aboriginal culture and know many of the artists personally as they often go on road trips to remote communities to connect with artists.

One of our FAVE places - check out the amazing paintings. The gallery is located in a wide street, with other galleries and some delightful shops. This gallery is friendly and has a vast array of Aboriginal work, a must visist.

If one wants to see true excellent indigenous Aboriginal Australian art, Japingka in Fremantle is the place to go. The exhibitions upstairs are pretty outstanding with some of the biggest names in the country on show. The owners know their stuff about Aboriginal art as they go bush themselves and discover new artists in remote outback communities.

I dropped in to see the latest exhibition and was pleasantly surprised. The curation and quality of works were superb. One gallery space featured more traditional works. The other had more contemporary work. There were comprehensive notes on the stories behind the paintings. The friendly staff recommended checking their website to read further details and to view extra works that couldn’t be displayed due to space restrictions.
There is also a gallery shop on the ground level where you can view or buy other works, including unframed canvases and prints. The current exhibition is a highlight of my latest visit to Freo.

Not only does the collection of Aboriginal art take your breath away, the actual building does itself!
The gentleman running the shop said that it had once been a shop where ship owners came to to order provisions and other items for their next sailing trip. They would go out and buy the items and the ship owners would come to collect it. He described it as an early form of Amazon!

We were strolling down High Street on our first visit to WA and came across Japingka Gallery. The paintings by local artists are amazing. There are 2 floors of exhibitions. Definitely worth a look!

Hello.
First of all, I would like to know if one can enter the gallery and just admire around the artworks just like a museum.
And if yes, do I need to pay for the entrance fee?
Thank you.
