About
The Army Museum of Western Australia is a regional museum which showcases Western Australia's role in the various conflicts in which Australia has participated. Saying that it also brings to the front Australia's role in the many conflicts that have seen an involvement by Australian armed forces. The Museum occupies the whole of the 1912 Artillery Barracks site, which in itself is a significant historical building and is heritage listed. There are many Galleries situated on the ground floor and upper floor in addition to other displays in out buildings and the front parade ground show cases a large number of Army vehicles from many periods. Some of the Galleries cover Pre 1914, WW1, WW1 Middle East, POW, WW2 Middle East Greece and Africa, WW2 Pacific War, Post WW2 conflicts. There are more! Visits for the public are conducted at 10:30am and 1:00pm each day, from Wednesday through to Sunday. Visits take approximately two hours and are escorted. All adult visitors to the museum must have the appropriate photo ID. The Museum is run in the main by Curatorial and Guide Volunteers. Well worth a look, you will be surprised at the content and layout of the displays. Western Australia, being so isolated has a reputation for building excellent Museums as the population are a bit restricted in being able to visit the Eastern States facilities. One thing that comes through from visitors comments to this page and the actual Museum visitors is to allow a good two hours for your visit, that is the minimum to cover the full displays.

Off the beaten track getting there but worth the walk. No the usual place to visit as you have to have a guide seeing that it is still a working military base. Never the less worth a visit.

Thank you Chrissie for your favourable review. Yes the large” Used Machinery” lot out the front and in the external buildings is quite something to see and the Trench Gallery is a favourite with the youngsters. It is worth considering that in WW1, in particular, boys not much older than your Grand Children took part in the war itself, particularly on the Turkish side and there was a story shared on our Facebook page, March 1st, of a boy of 12yo who stowed away on a troop ship to join his Father and Brothers., followed by another of 12yo girl who stowed away on a troop ship to do the same thing but she was located before the ship left Australia. From1911-1929 boys 12–14 years old had to enrol in the junior cadets, 14–18 year olds enrolled in the senior cadets, and 18–26 year olds had to register with the home defence militia. Come back again as there is more on display particularly the colourful pre 1914 Gallery which opened on Anzac Day 2015.

Where to start? From the minute I walked in, to the minute I left all the staff were helpful and friendly. Good anecdotes and good explanations of the exhibits. Highlight for me were the 3 Victoria cross and the stories behind them. Cheers to everyone

The Army Museum, housed in the old Fremantle Barracks and manned by extremely friendly and enthusiastic volunteers is a NOT TO BE MISSED place to visit.

With a great display of varied army vehicles from convicts past positioned on the grounds around the buildings, its a great introduction to the fantastic collection of information and articles that are housed within.

A treat for young and old to witness material of campaigns that Australia have proudly attested themselves in over their brief history.

The main building contains a number of floor levels dedicated to various campaigns and present extremely well.

I personally think this is a well kept secret that has to be advertised more so more people can have the opportunity to see what we in Australia should be very proud of.

Again, well done to the volunteers that give up their time to help us understand a time in our past.

What a great way to spend 2 hours on any afternoon, The staff are friendly and very well informed, Its not on the same scale as the Canberra war museum but there is plenty to see right from the moment you enter the Parade area which boasts an array of military vehicles.
There is a small gift shop and wheel chair access is available, the museum covers many wars, The Boar war, The first world war, the second world war, the Korean war, you can wonder at your own pace or the Volunteers on duty will give you a personalized guided tour. Entry fee is $10 per Adult or $20 for a family of 4, and discount with a concession card. Great place to visit, Don't miss it.

This museum is a credit to the volunteers and staff who a preserving WA's links to our military past (and also the present), in a very thoughtful and informative way. My one tip would be to allow plenty of time for your visit as there is such a lot to see. You will be escorted by a friendly tour guide, who is well versed on Army history and who will point out relevant items/displays that may be of interest to you as you visit different sections of the museum. You can bring your car and park on the parade ground for free or catch public transport (train and buses) and get off at the stop closest to Burt St. This museum is a hidden gem. Thank you to all concerned.

THE WA Army museum is housed in one of the old Federation buildings in Fremantle. There is a new exhibit on the top floor which shows the different theatres of war from Boer war to Afganastan. Very good. There is also a nice collection of medals on the lower floor with information on the soldiers who waas awarded the medals.

One of the best Military Museums I have seen. Outstanding displays with Main Battle tanks through to APCs, trucks and artillery pieces.Excellent displays across all involvement of the Australian Army with focus on Soldiers from Western Australia. You are taken through the museum by a guide who stays with you the whole time. My 6 year enjoyed seeing the displays he enjoyed the trench display the most.
