About
The Army Museum of Western Australia is a regional museum which showcases Western Australia's role in the various conflicts in which Australia has participated. Saying that it also brings to the front Australia's role in the many conflicts that have seen an involvement by Australian armed forces. The Museum occupies the whole of the 1912 Artillery Barracks site, which in itself is a significant historical building and is heritage listed. There are many Galleries situated on the ground floor and upper floor in addition to other displays in out buildings and the front parade ground show cases a large number of Army vehicles from many periods. Some of the Galleries cover Pre 1914, WW1, WW1 Middle East, POW, WW2 Middle East Greece and Africa, WW2 Pacific War, Post WW2 conflicts. There are more! Visits for the public are conducted at 10:30am and 1:00pm each day, from Wednesday through to Sunday. Visits take approximately two hours and are escorted. All adult visitors to the museum must have the appropriate photo ID. The Museum is run in the main by Curatorial and Guide Volunteers. Well worth a look, you will be surprised at the content and layout of the displays. Western Australia, being so isolated has a reputation for building excellent Museums as the population are a bit restricted in being able to visit the Eastern States facilities. One thing that comes through from visitors comments to this page and the actual Museum visitors is to allow a good two hours for your visit, that is the minimum to cover the full displays.

- Robert WBendigo, Australia38 contributionsAllow yourself plenty of time. This visit was a real treat. My wife and I spent five hours touring the facility. The information panels are well written and easy to read, without being too technical. The volunteers roaming the museum were very friendly and knowledgeable. A great day.Visited March 2023Written March 19, 2023
- Steve WKarratha, Australia1,171 contributionsA true hidden gem in Fremantle. What a brilliant surprise this place is! This museum covers the Australian Army's Western Australian history, from colonial times through to the latest peacekeeping duties. In my opinion it has the second best Victoria Cross display in Australia, only pipped at the post by the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The staff, both volunteers and Army, were extremely helpful and welcoming, making the whole visit so much better. Depending on your level of interest in the history, this can take anything from 1 to 4 hours to take in all the presentations and the information.Visited March 2023Written March 31, 2023
- Thomas LyonsLondon, United Kingdom5 contributionsBest Military museum in WAFantastic Museum located very close to Fremantle and manageable from Perth. The exhibitions were new, with the right amount of detail and diverse. There was a significant amount of Military equipment too and the volunteers were absolutely exceptional. Visiting from the UK and being in the military, if my regiment had a museum anything like this then I would be ecstatic. I visited with my elderly grandfather and he thoroughly enjoyed it too. 10/10 must visit.Visited March 2023Written April 13, 2023

This museum is well laid out that if you follow the recommended path, you will follow the complete military history of Western Australia from the early colonies through the world wars, Vietnam and the peacekeeping and counter terror conflicts of more recent times. The items they have on display here are in excellent condition and the team of staff and volunteers are an absolute pleasure to talk to about both the items on display and what they represent. You can tell they put a lot of work into what they do, and they have every right to be proud to represent the history of Australia's Army

Very comprehensive, engaging & attentive staff.
The armoured component of the exhibits was fantastic to see. Great that they can preserve that piece of history.

Terrific old building housing some magnificent displays telling the story and event of our Military conflicts around the Globe. A great place to learn and understand that WAR is a last resort and those we send to fight it suffer a terrible price for our freedoms.

I have spent a lot of time here and find it fascinating. The standard of the exhibits is excellent and they are well presented in a authentic manner. The stories told are part of our history and everyone would benefit from a visit. I particularly liked the Post 1945 Gallery.

This museum is an outstanding representation of the Western Australia army's history. Extensive collection of footage, personal items, uniforms, arms, etc. If you have an interest in this topic you can spend hours moving through the building's different rooms. They are in order as you move through the last two centuries. We spent two hours focusing on WWI and WWII. There are tanks and armaments outdoors as well.
Hours are Wednesday through Sunday 1030am - 3pm BUT last entry is at 1pm. You must show photo ID.

One of the best Military Museums I have seen. Outstanding displays with Main Battle tanks through to APCs, trucks and artillery pieces.Excellent displays across all involvement of the Australian Army with focus on Soldiers from Western Australia. You are taken through the museum by a guide who stays with you the whole time. My 6 year enjoyed seeing the displays he enjoyed the trench display the most.

Visiting from Toronto, my cousin and I were greeted at the entrance and provided with a personal guides tour. David was enthusiastic and guided us though all the exhibits, with clear explanations and amazing stories about the various campaigns, as well as stories about some of the individuals. This is the gold standard on how guides tours should be given!

unfortunately I cant remember a particular exhibit purely focusing on the bands as the exhibits are set up within the theaters of each war.
