- Jeff_8mileMelbourne, Australia277 contributionsYou have just got to go!A visit to the Fremantle markets is a must if visiting Perth. Easy to get to by train from Perth CBD or anywhere with a train service. This place is like the old time markets all big cities used to have until they got hung up on posh shopping centres full of big name brands. In other words they are great if you are not put off by crowds. Plenty of other attractions in Fremantle’s shopping district.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 22, 2023
- reeciebobsieFrankston, Australia113 contributionsPacked in like sardinesDropped in after the prison tour around 115pm on a Sunday. Was chocker a block and I mean.... could not move. Hard to see the stalls and queues for food and people standing in the walkway eating which made it even harder to navigate. Various food options (if you can manage to get served) and other nic nacs etc. The fruit and veg seemed good quality and cheap prices tooVisited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 31, 2023
- JohnstannoSingapore, Singapore521 contributionsWorth to visit for the food!We have breakfast here and tried/bought coffee, orange juice, eggspot sandwich, cream puffs, beef jerky, strawberries and honeycake. The food are good. Shopping wise nothing really interesting. It is a small market so you can cover this whole place in 30 minutes. Worth a visit!Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 4, 2023
- Yog-SothothTrenton, Maine1,232 contributionsBring your appetite! As we've traveled Terra Australis from east to west, the covered markets just get better and better. If you're here on a weekend (when the market is open), grab the train from Perth and get on down here. Every kind of ethnic food you've every heard of, and probably some you haven't (kangaroo biltong, anyone)? If I lived nearby I would eat here all the time. Extensive assortment of local tchotchkes on sale if that's your thing.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 10, 2023
- KazbahD37 contributionsGreat market on a hot dayThis is a must-do activity in my book - but I love a good market. It's mainly inside so great for a hot day (which it was when we were there). Lots of different stalls with so much to try - teas, wines, nuts, etc. Was well worth the visit.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 5, 2024
- jw6969Ascot, United Kingdom3,058 contributionsUsual market set-up.My wife would give this market a 4. I would give it a 2. So a 3 it is! It was packed on a Saturday of course. There are plenty of reasonable food outlets and all the touristy tat you could ever wish for. My wife did get a nice top for a fair price and I bought a delicious freshly squeezed orange juice. But frankly - I couldn’t wait to get out!Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 23, 2024
- V WGreater Adelaide, Australia334 contributionsDefinitely worth a browse - plan to go when it's not too hot.It was a really hot day when we visited here: the crowds and lack of good air flow made it even hotter. They have crammed a lot into a small space. Even so, it was interesting, and had an eclectic assortment of foods and chattels for sale. It's an easy 10-15 minute walk from the train station, and is about five brisk-walking minutes from Fremantle Prison.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 23, 2024
- Bronwyn TAdelaide, Australia333 contributionsA must visit to this renowned marketA very diverse and interesting visit to this iconic market. Very busy on a weekend. Lots of things to sample such as wines/spirits, and purchases of food and homemade gifts. Also the fruit and vegies were of excellent quality and reasonable priced.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 29, 2024
- Rochelle FRandolph, New Jersey1,140 contributionsA nice day at FremantleWe took the train from Perth and wandered around the markets which was extremely crowded. There are lots of food vendors and we picked a Greek one and managed to find someplace outdoors to eat. The markets are selling all kinds of goods and we bought some gifts. We also wandered around Fremantle which was a nice place to visit.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 6, 2024
- DanWeeSingapore, Singapore453 contributionsStill an attraction after all these years! We've been visiting this market since the 2000s and it has not changed much. Still a busy, bustling place where there are lots to see, buy, eat, browse.. interesting stuff that reflects the diverse culture in Australia. Prices are not too bad, and do visit in winter to escape the heat of Summer, as it gets way too hot inside sometimes.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 25, 2024

Loved this place, small, fun with a great variety of stalls. Not too commercial either. It has a good variety of food stalls (my son had a very different and delicious chicken karaag loaded hot chips with teriyaki sauce from a small Japanese stall), good coffee, juices, cupcake stand. I bought a bit of pottery, soaps and a bag of chai. Second time I went there was a very talented and lovely aboriginal man playing a didgeridoo. Overall definitely worth visiting. Only drawback is the market is small and can get hot and crowded (in summer).

The market is open Friday to Sunday. There are lots of independent stalls selling anything such as original artwork, clothing, food. A nice place to meet local traders and get away from the big brand stores.

I love this place and I hate crowded places. Visit and you will realise how much I love this place!
It's only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and holidays.
It has, everything. Street food, gifts, fruit veg, artisan breads, superb jewelry and hand crafted works of art, a guy who photographs your eye, (I know it sounds weird but you get a blon up pic of your eye, I had shots of both of mine done, they look like a planet).

Another venue worth visiting if you are in Fremantle. Besides visiting Shipwreck Museum, this is also a place you would love to stop by for at least an hour or so and if you are an overseas tourist, there are nice souvenirs to purchase. I love going there to get my homemade soaps and browse around. Food, drinks and lots of stalls.

This market started as a local artist outlet and has grown and changed over the years. It is now a souvenir and knick nack market with a large fruit and vegetable section.
The market and Fremantle are worth a visit.

Such an amazing market. There is a wide range of stalls for everyone and yummy food stalls also. Check online as they are only open certain days of the week, it is super busy when we went there on the Friday. Parking is nearby (paid)

It was such a joy returning to the Fremantle Markets after at least twenty years since I first visited. The memories came flooding back as my brother and I wandered through the aisles of amazing stalls containing arts & craft, fashion/accessories, food, homewares, kids items and much more.
One stall that particularly caught our attention ‘Iris Photo’ where they photograph your eye and print your it on the spot producing a one of a kind piece of artwork. Perfect for a unique family portrait or gift.

This place felt like a fire hazard with an emergency waiting to happen. We would’ve liked to get some food but the lines were crazy and there was no where to eat that we could see. Then there was the fake NBA jersey store and other knock off places. How is this even allowed in 2023? I’m sure some of the other places were good but we just kept getting pushed along. I don’t recommend taking children into this place from a safety point of view.

Do - Stop at Freo Gozleme. Had the fresh feta and spinach flat pie... It has just come out of the oven! Loved it! The baklava was also so authentic.
We really enjoyed ourselves just sitting at the counter and enjoying our food and complimentary tea! The stall owners were really kind and oh so patient with everyone while also super friendly and efficiently working away!
Don’t - even bother with the Coffee Connection! Sorry but oh what a nuisance. 1. We had to witness the two ladies having a squabble over how to write down orders and everything stoped while they did this 2. Had to repeat orders three different times and we waited for what felt like for ever to get 2 cups of coffee
3. After all the waiting and the re-confirming of our orders and witnessing the drama ... my coffee went straight to the bin! Just not my cup! Didn’t like it at all!
Otherwise browsing the different stalls and just seeing what was on offer made for a fun morning.

Fremantle Markets is a popular tourist attraction. I can see how a visit to Perth should have a visit to Fremantle Markets on the itinerary. It also appears that every Perth visitor thinks this same way. So Perth visitors, combined with Perth locals, make the Markets are absolutely packed no matter how to time your visit, and yes even during Perth's "non-peak" visitor season. There is just no way of getting around it.
While there were a few good shops, fruit shops, and food outlets (and some were notably quite good), it is clear that there is simply too many people. They should consider expanding the markets or at least provide more open space to sit and enjoy the ambiance. I suggest 5 or 10 times more seating at minimum.
It's clear that the Fremantle Markets has minimised the availability of tables and chairs so to maximise shops/food stalls/fruit stalls (and therefore revenue/profit). Unfortunately, this comes at a cost to customers. I saw many customers fight over/place pressure on other customers who took the scarse seats and tables near the food area. Eating the food standing up is very difficult as the packaging of the food is not ideal for this.

Have plans to visit Caversham Wildlife Park in the morning via the Shuttle bus (return transfer to hotel at cbd) and visiting Fremantle market in the afternoon. Expecting to reach Fremantle market at 3pm via train fr Perth Station. Is this plans feasible? Is the stalls at Fremantle market still open at 3pm? How long does it takes to shop around at Fremantle market? Was planning to have dinner at kailis fish market cafe after Fremantle market.
Written November 6, 2017
As I recall the train trip is about half an hour so that should be doable. How long it takes to get around the market depends on how much interest you have in the stalls...I spent less than an hour there. Some people might spend an hour and a half. I am not sure what time the markets close...easy to check on line.

Hi, may I know what is the best day and timing to visit Fremantle market? Thanks so much. Amy Singapore
Written May 11, 2017
Hi Amy,
Thank you for your message.
It all depends on what type of experience you are after. If you like crowds then I recommend visiting around lunchtime on Sunday where there is a buzz and the market is full.
If you don't like crowds then I recommend visiting on Friday or Saturday morning.
Kind regards,
Natasha
