Absorbing City Centre
Oct 2019
Komarno, the twin town of Komarom, is on the "Highland."The term "Highlands" in Hungarian now is restricted to the territory of Slovakia. Since before Trianon, it was a Hungarian town, with a mixed population, the cityscape and architectural style reflects this origin. Some building reminds me of the edifices that I have seen in Prague, while others are similar to the houses in Hungarian towns. The result of this mixed-style is a vibrant, absorbing city center. Especially attractive is the Courtyard of Europe with its slightly bizarre but very gripping, colorful buildings. With the back up of some old houses, it is worth to have an enjoyable walk in the City Center.

Charming place
Sep 2019 • Couples
Came here by train from Budapest and so glad I did as the Courtyard of Europe was so beautiful and peaceful. There were so many beautiful buildings and the locals were so friendly and helpful. Nice places to eat and drink and very cheap. The views from the bridge between Komarno and Komarom were amazing.

Small but Interesting City Centre
Sep 2019
A very compact city centre which you can walk round in a couple of hours but with plenty to interest you. Amazing buildings and churches.

Nice buildings in town centre but deserted
Aug 2019 • Family
This town centre is deserted every time I visit. The square is pretty but the old building , the former medical centre needs the reconstruction work strated asap. As some reviewers previously said there is a lack of shops and restaurants. Well these restaurants suit locals stopping for lunch. If you want to enjoy local food, there are some lovely places by the rivers. One is near town centre by the old docks by Danube with a nice terrace view, the others are by river Vah or a lake called Mrtve Rameno. There is a nice and quiet pizza and pasta place called LUX tucked away of Jokai Avenue. I would highly recommend the two ice cream shops by the main square. Clothes shopping is non existent as there are some good shopping places north , north west, south , south east and south west of the town within s short driving distance. Look out for bank holiday dates to avoid disappointment of places being shut. This town centre reminds me a ghost town. For decades , this town had had one of the largest shipyards , ship building industry in Europe employing 1000s of workers. Unfortunately this is no longer the case and it reflects on the town. Shame as the town has so much history, it's surrounded by miles and miles of Fortress shared with the twin town in Hungary, Komarom, separated by river Danube.

Very quiet

It's a very quiet city centre. A nice pedestrian area. This place is good to spend some four hours. Have lunch there take a stroll around the place and at the courtyard of Europe, maybe an ice cream and back to where you belong.

Pretty average

Nice enough to wander about the old town but it is nothing on other cities in Europe. There were very few people about and not a lot of stores.

Aussie Kiwi loved it

We arrived in Komarno by default. No water in the river and Viking picked us up in Komarno. Viking Directors told us that there was a market and a fort. As two couples we had to do something. We walked off and came across a fabulous mini market. Then arrived in the shops selling all wares. An Icecream for 40 cheap as chips. Walked on and came across the Fort. We arrived just in time for the 11am tour. $2 Euro and the fabulous blonde tour guide who was a teacher at the local school asked us English or Slovakian? English there’s 4 of us. Wrong 25 of us and she did it in both languages. 90 minutes. 85 acres 3 levels deep. Then she told us to go to the wine bar in the square. Beers and wines later a taxi to the supermarket. Wait here. One member waited with him whilst we got supplies. 30 minutes later we got back to the boat. 5 euro. Hire a taxi do the fort go to the winery 30 minutes away there’s a brewery too.
Not to be missed. Locals friendly. The highlight was the Teacher at the Technical School. A beautiful passionate soul who loved her town. Not to be missed. We will return.

Nice and clean city centre

You can enjoy a cup of coffee or some ice cream in the middle of the town. All the buildings and landmarks are close in walking distance to the main square. There are plenty of seating opportunities and a clean environment. Very relaxing spot

Nowheres ville
Oct 2018 • Couples
I read some of the reviews of Komarno and so drove there from Nitra as it sounded worth a few litres of diesel at least.

Sad to say it wasn't. As someone else wrote on this forum, it might be nice in 20 years or so, but today give it a miss, even if you are passing.

Yes the square is quite nice and yes the town is trying, but 3 or 4 women's dress shops, a couple of bars and an ice cream shop does not constitute a tourist destination even if it is called Europa square.

So for now it remains nowheres ville. The only saving grace is Tesco is just over the river in Hungary if you are starving!!
