Overview

The Estonian National Museum is located in Tartu and its activities cover many places in the city. The museum has its main building, an exhibition house, the Postal Museum and the Raadi Manor complex at its disposal. There are plans to have all these under the same roof in the future. The museum was founded in 1909 and dedicated to the memory of our biggest collector of old items Jakob Hurt in order to maintain his heritage. It was named the Estonian National Museum. The plans of the founders were so extensive that the new museum could have easily be called the Estonian Museum (cf. British Museum, Russian Museum).

Impressing exhibition, a interesting and well balanced flow through the Estonian history up till now, very concrete and well chosen examples of different periods of the nation, lots of modern digital technology ( easy to use) to go deeper in topics. A challenging model for...More

This excellent museum recently opened on a former Soviet air strip and therefore has the dimensions of an airport runway--long and narrow. You can easily spend several hours here enjoying the permanent and temporary exhibits. There was a temporary exhibit on Estonian folk costumes of...More

This museum is a really interesting and informative place: spacious inside, and lots of room to maneuver around the displays. The card that changes the language panels feels almost like a magic wand! It is a fascinating look at the personal lives of Estonians and...More

Frankly, most of the displays in the museum will be of only marginal interest to non-Estonians (or others with particular interest in Baltic folk life), but the museum is worth visiting for its stunning architecture and its cutting edge technology (including a chipped card you...More

Absolutely great museum - really modern and talks about everyday life of Estonian people. Worth visiting once you are in Estonia (or in neighboring countries).

We went with my wife particularly to Tartto for the first to see the new Estonian National Museum. It is in many ways a very beautiful complex. The building itself is modern and flexible for changes, the things inside from the Estonian history are fantastically...More
