The Estonian National Museum is located in Tartu and its activities cover many places in the city. The museum has its main building, an exhibition house, the Postal Museum and the Raadi Manor complex at its disposal. There are plans to have all these under the same roof in the future. The museum was founded in 1909 and dedicated to the memory of our biggest collector of old items Jakob Hurt in order to maintain his heritage. It was named the Estonian National Museum. The plans of the founders were so extensive that the new museum could have easily be called the Estonian Museum (cf. British Museum, Russian Museum).

We visited the temporary (I think?) folk dress exhibition where we were shown traditional clothings from all over Estonia, with Swedish influence along the coast and Russian influence along the eastern border. Beautiful clothings. The permanent exhibition was displayed in a creative way and it...More

A brand new building high on one end and lower on the other end. This is where the president met dignitaries at V100. A beautiful arrayed collection of Estonian life and history. Audio equipment to aid in foreign languages. Interactive machines, videos, movies, library, sales...More

Here you can find some information about Estonian history. Permanent exhibition "Echo of the Urals" is very interesting!

The museum has only been open for 18 months at the time of writing and is cutting edge in terms of displays and technology. What I really appreciated as a non Estonian speaker was the swipe card which allowed all the story boards on each...More

Very new and big building, the main exhibition room is too chaotic, maybe would have been better with a guide.

The museum house is very modern from the outside. It takes a lot of time to visit the museum. There are interesting things about Estonian history.

I would recommend to visit "upside down house" which is near to that museum, it's definitely more fun than this one...

Absolutely worth a visit. You cannot see everything at once, but as an international visitor, I particularly enjoyed the national costume display. With the touch of an electronic card, the museum descriptions could be read in English. The main historical exhibition is a fascinating walk...More

Massive building. Has very good shows up - could have so much more as it has so much space not used. But the shows that they have up are very well done.
