Neighborhood: Margaret Island
For Budapest, this island between the banks of the Danube represents a green oasis, especially during summer when its emerald spaces are much enjoyed by both locals and tourists. The gardens here are very picturesque; the flowers in full bloom give the landscape a variety of hues; the fountains add an air of freshness, making walks peaceful, joyful and romantic. A leisurely stroll will uncover a variety of sites, even the ruins of a medieval Franciscan church and convent are still visible.

- Sarah G150 contributionsIf you visit nowhere else in Budapest make sure to visit Margaret IslandIf you visit nowhere else in Budapest make sure to visit Margaret Island. Easily one of my favorite parts of our trip. Beautiful, tranquil and peaceful, it's the perfect respite from the busy city. And in spite of the size there's so much to see and enjoy. We didn't really get the best of it going so late in the year since the gardens were beginning to fade but were so lovely even so. I can only imagine how spectacular they'd be in full view.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 6, 2023
- Kathy LWirral, United Kingdom44 contributionsOasis of calmMargaret island is a must visit when in Budapest. It reminded me of Central Park in New York, it’s so different from the rest of the city and so much to explore you could spend a whole day there walking round. The musical fountain is beautiful especially after dark. The number 26 bus goes from one end to the other and takes you back to the city but it is easily walked around for most.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 2, 2023
- Shane BTe Awamutu, New Zealand810 contributionsRecommend rent transport if you want to visit whole IslandIsland is quite big in a couple of hours we had only seen about a quarter of it though we did spend half our time in a well priced bar Steg. There are a variety of rental vehicles from golf carts to bikes would recommend one of these if you wanted to look around whole island. We spent a bit of a time with a quite impressive fountain that danced to music both classic and more modern.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 7, 2023
- PavelBudapest, Hungary42 contributionsOne of the best parks everI have lived in Budapest for 2 years and this was my most favourite place to relax. It simply is one of the best parks ever. There is just everything you need - long walks in calm under the trees, musical fountain, Japanese gardens, rose gardens, spa, minizoo, ruins of old monastery. This place just cannot be described. It must be experienced! So peaceful in the middle of Danube. The trees and distance itself protect it from all the noise and pollution of the city. This must be, how heaven looks! Miss it so much since I relocated. Please, come and visit this magical place and stay respectful.Visited March 2023Traveled soloWritten November 17, 2023
- Anna D17 contributionsBeautiful but mostly shut in DecemberThis is a beautiful, tranquil island and we thoroughly enjoyed a peaceful walk along the length of it. However, we went one morning in December and everything was shut apart from one toilet and some of the spa. It was also too cold for the fountains, which wasn't a surprise. It did mean there weren't many people about, so it was serene.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 24, 2023

Easy to access, short walk from the closest bus or metro station. The island is pretty big, so you can have a long walk to explore it by foot or rent a bike. Lots of hidden gems where you can relax, read book or just lay on the grass. The island offers lots of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can enjpy local food, snaxks and drinks. - TheLinkersModesto, California47 contributionsMargaret Island BudapestThis was my favorite place to visit in Budapest. We walked there and back from our hotel which was over 10 miles. The island is rich in history. It is named after a princess that was given to a convent as an offering to God so that invaders would leave and peace would return. Sit, listen and watch the dancing water fountain, walk the beautiful gardens, see medieval ruins, and eat at one of the many eateries. Lots to see and do. There is a thermal bath house that we did not use, but looked inviting.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 6, 2024

We walked across from the bridge and up to the Water tower, hoping to grab a coffee there. It was very pleasant but most areas were closed, so no coffee.
There are pedal cycles to hire and it is clearly a favourite for runners and walkers alike. The mini zoo has bird of prey coupled up in a small cage area - so not great or ethical.
Enjoy the walk as it is relaxing.

This island is 2.5km long and is the greenest, most beautiful and most visited in the city. Almost every large and modern city has its own "lungs", and in Budapest it is this island. You must put this island on the list of places to visit in the city, but you will have to spend a few hours here, because it is huge and there are many places to visit.
The island is located between Arpad and Margaret Bridges, so you can enter the island from either side. I did it from the side of the Arpad bridge.
The whole island has a lot of greenery and is beautifully decorated. At the beginning there is a "Centenary" monument which is surrounded by many flowers. To walk the whole island along the paths along the river, you will need about 1.5 hours, and from one end to the other about 45 minutes.
The best time of year to visit is from spring to early fall. At the beginning of the island, you will be greeted by the musical fountain, which is the biggest tourist attraction on the island. The fountain got a bigger repertoire in May this year. It runs every day from the end of April to the end of October, and the music and sprinklers make the atmosphere even better. Music is played at certain hours of the day. Next to the fountain there are many benches, where you can sit and enjoy. This island has a lot to offer, for every type of tourist. Here you will see both city residents and tourists enjoying the island together. In order to be able to see the whole island without getting tired, I recommend renting a quad bike and walking around the whole island. I managed to reach only half of the island on foot.
The island has sports fields, a swimming pool, beaches where there are day parties, an amusement park, a Japanese garden, a water tower, a mini zoo, a jogging track, a spa, etc. There are toilets, water fountains and benches throughout the island.
I recommend going up the water tower. That tower was built in 1911 and serves to supply water to restaurants, hotels and bars on the island. Since 2012, tourists have been allowed to climb to the top of the tower, for which an entrance fee is charged.
On the island there is an old church from the 13th century, which was demolished by the Ottomans in the 16th century.

Spent a couple of hours here on our recent trip to Budapest. It's a tranquil, green space with lots of flora and fauna. Great for walking around and taking a picnic. We stopped at a cafe where there were plenty of tables and chairs to have a rest and have a drink/snack/ice cream. There are toilets dotted around but remember they are manned and charge 250 HUF which is easier to pay in cash as it's a tiny amount! The fountain is fabulous and has lots of seating in the shade which was very welcome as the weather was fabulous! Has historic interest with the story of Margaret and the ruins of the church and convent.

A lovely break from the hustle and bustle of the city; easily accessible by tram from the city centre. You can either walk through the park or hire a cart to cycle round; either are a great option. Beautifully maintained with lots of flowers, there is also a monastery at the end of the walk which is lovely. We spent about 2-3 hours here and it costs nothing for entry. There are food carts dotted around if you want to eat something as well as toilets, but these are usually 250 HUF per visit. Would recommend

Fantastic 5.3km dedicated running track round the island marked out in 0.5km sections. Was ideal for us to run off the excesses of the night before. Really picturesque and safe too. Wonderful.

We visited margaritas island with friends and thought to rent a bike around the island. We were 4 People and we were suggested a bike for four adults and two children and then a big blue bike. It was Quite difficult to pedal and we did not really enjoy as much the ride. Probably something wrong which required strong effort on our side to go around the island and return the bike . In case you opt for this sport activity we strongly recommend to avoid the blue bikes for six people - 4 adults and two children - to Make sure you enjoy your ride and have fun.

Used red hop on hop off bus to get to Margaret Island huge gardens especially rose garden and Japanese garden fantastic lakes and small zoo plenty of children’s playground swings slides and roundabout. Picnic areas we spent three hours but didn’t see all of the Island highly recommend a visit. It’s free plenty of food and drink outlets to sit and relax. Plenty of music really worth a visit highly recommend.

Margaret Island is a lovely place to visit and as a public area it is free entrance. It is obviously a place the people of Budapest also enjoy. A quiet place in the middle of Donau between Buda and Pest. You can easily walk around the island and explore places like the ruins of the old monastery or the art nouveau water tower and the Japanese garden. Afterward you can relax by the music water spring or have something to eat or drink. There are many places to choose between. If you like to run - there is an excel at trail around the Island.
There is also thermal Spa a little Zoo ( we did not see this) and sun beds you can use free of charge. It is easy to go to the island either by bus, boat ,bike or simply to walk over the bridge😊I recommend reading a little bit about the Islands history before visiting- it makes it more interesting to see.

What a lovely find Margaret island is.
It took us two hours to walk around.
The island zoo, the old ruined monastery, fountains and lovely open spaces, swimming pools and out side thermal spars.
You can rent bikes or electric buggies, or
Run/jog or just walk it.
It’s a shame we went in January so everything was closed and quiet quiet.
But sure it will be busy and very vibrant in the summertime.

Is there a tube station on Margaret Island?
Written October 26, 2019
Not on the island itself, but tram stops on Margaret’s bridge just a few hundred yards from the road to the island. There are various forms of transport once on the island itself though, that you can hire for a few pounds or euros.

אני רוצה לנוסע לבודפשט באמצע נובמבר
הייתי רוצה לדעת כדאי? ומה מזג אויר?
Written October 25, 2019

Hola Joselo.
