About
Serving as a royal residence and the site where the country's rulers governed Poland for five centuries (1038-1596), this castle is a symbol of the independent Polish state and today contains a priceless collection of 16th-century Flemish tapestries, considered to be one of the largest in the world.

- Carly s4 contributionsConfusing and priceyCathedral - worth it for the bell tower and it’s view Castle - overly complicated ticketing, you pay per area of the castle, there is no combined ticket. We were going to visit the Armoury but saw comments on here (thank you) advising it’s not much chop so we opted for the Royal Apartments. This was a collection of art arranged in a series of rooms, the audio guide spoke of a few pieces in each room but nothing was really linked together. I would have expected to move through the rooms / pieces in some sort of chronological order aligned to the castles age and occupants. Instead it all felt rather higgledy piggledy and we left without a real sense of the castles history. A shame it’s not better organised, it has the potential to be spectacular.Visited January 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 31, 2023
- Vicky596Bonn, Germany85 contributionsNice treasury and armoury, rest can be avoidedNot really worth the visit to this castle. The armoury and the treasury are nice to visit but the royal apartments and state rooms can be avoided, as the tickets all together are quite expensive for what you visit. The staff at the ticket office treated us rudely as we asked the tickets for students (there is a student reduction), because we said it at the end of the sentence "Hello, we would like to buy two tickets for state rooms, ..., etc with the student discount, please". In the end they made us pay the entire price because they said that we should have said that we wanted the discount at the beginning of the sentence. Never happened this to me before!Visited April 2023Written April 11, 2023
- Jmox73Wakefield, United Kingdom74 contributionsModern castleAs the original castle was destroyed this is a new modern castle which didn’t really look like a castle. It was more like a museum of paintings and tapestries. A bit of a let down. Also no fireplaces inside as the castle was built with central heatingVisited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 1, 2023
- Joanne SSouthport, United Kingdom158 contributionsNasty guide in the castle apartments!Beautiful place but as myself and my son were walking through the castle apartments a ‘tour guide’ (old man in blue shirt with a bunch of uninterested teens) came over to myself and another lady and shouted in our faces to be quiet! We had been talking about a painting and were not being loud, I was absolutely disgusted and said ‘why’ and he walked back to his group! The lady I had been talking to was obviously embarrassed so I didn’t pursue it further! The castle isn’t a mausoleum or a place of worship and there were no signs asking for quiet! Absolution disgusted at this person and I don’t think people like him should be hired to guide impressionable young people, even obviously bored ones.Visited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 31, 2023

One way of uncover the first capital of Poland “ Krakow “ and its heritage, is visiting this castle and the surrounded area . I have enjoyed the visit with the family and it is recommended to visit it if you have time and like the culture.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 30, 2023
- edward w17 contributionsPoor access for disabled visitorsDifficult for wheel chair users tget to the castle complex as it is accessed via a steep hill nor does the ticket office have a level surface. Having pushed the wheel chair up the hill was told that there were no concessions for wheelchair users despite a notice daying that there were. Within the castle access is reasonably good with lifts to the state and private apartments. The art collection is poorly anotated and indeed many displays have no explanation at all and where it does exist is not readable from a wheelchair. The Generally, was left with the impression that disabled visitors are not really welcome with little attempt made to meet their needsVisited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 23, 2023

Magnificent area, a lot of history. Nice with toilet included in the ticket. Bought entrance to the royal private rooms, that was a disappointment, the same with the dragons den.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 24, 2023
- RickDenBeaconsfield, United Kingdom455 contributionsNice place, but you'll need to pay for lots of areasOur hotel was adjacent to the castle, so it was a must visit. Entry is up a long slop from the front, and we purchased what we thought was a sell-on ticket - this turned out to be not the case. You see the church and gardens, but not the royal jewels or apartments, which seemd a bit off, when we were told this ticket gets you everywhere. Anyhow, the church is very nice and you have the option of climbing the bell tower to the top. Be warned you'll need some energy to climb the hundreds of stairs and cramped areas to reach the top. Saying that my parents who are both 77 managed it at a slower pace!!Visited August 2023Written August 21, 2023
- ObiChanKenobiNottingham, United Kingdom39 contributionsGrand Castle with Beautiful City ViewsWe visited Wawel Castle on our first day in Krakow and it was great to explore and pass through. We walked up from the city side where you see the leaf-coated walls and towers, and came to a fantastic viewing point before going into the castle grounds where you look out over the river and the other side of Krakow. Going into the grounds, it’s pretty large and an ideal spot for photo opportunities as there are works of contemporary art as well as traditional statues and ornaments. The castle and inclusive buildings are very pretty and stand out whilst you’re there and when looking at it from a distance. There are also regular tours running throughout the grounds and inside the buildings at a somewhat fair price however due to our time constraints, we chose not to attend a tour. Nonetheless, Wawel Castle is an amazing free and central attraction for any tourist and explorer whom have only a short time in the city. The fire-breathing metal dragon (which we sadly missed) is also just as the bottom of the castle on the river side.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 30, 2023
- Trudiwr95 contributionsFabulous castle and tentsWhat a beautiful castle! The tent exhibition is incredible and definitely worth going to, but beware of the hoards of tourists and don’t go on a Monday when I believe it is free in the morning. It’s only cheap to go in and worth paying to avoid the crowds.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 2, 2023

Beautiful castle. Lovely to look around. Was very busy with school trips so didn’t get to experience it how we imagined. Can imagine if you knew more about the families there this would be very interesting. It was a beautiful castle and would recommend but thought it would offer more than it did.

Visited the castle for the cultural history and surrounding views and we were not disappointed. Plenty to see and a nice little cafe within the grounds. The down side was having to pay for each section of the castle even the toilets if you never had a ticket. Lovely souvenirs in the shop at realistic prices.

Majestic historical gem. Really enjoyed my time here and I spent around 5 hours total. I got the combined ticket for everything. Stand outs include the treasure room and residences.
You can add the cathedral to extend the time. The dragon cave was pointless and the tower was just ok.
Overall a very enjoyable experience. You can use your ticket multiple times for the toilet

I have been to Poland numerous times and have visited Wawel during every season. The view, the history and the energy are so positive, I could see it a hundred times and it will never get old. Take time to see everything at Wawel if you can. You won’t regret it!

From the outside the architecture is impressive. The art inside was quite interesting, although it was rather crowded and people were pushing at times. I have osteoarthritis of the hips, there is some seating on the walk round but lots of steps that don't make it very accessible. After hours of walking my arthritis was burning worse than some of the artwork, some very odd faces which look to be drawn by someone who doesn't know what a human is but at least they made me laugh a bit, there was no seating available as it was all taken. I went to lean against the wall by the exit whilst waiting for my wife and her aunt who were still looking at the art. I was then shouted at and lectured in Polish. I had committed a Catholic sin of leaning against some old leather on the wall, which I hadn't noticed. I said I have osteoarthritis and there is no seating. To which I was laughed and told in English that this is valuable leather I am daring to touch. I walked out down the many stairs burning with rage and pain. In conclusion not a great experience. Nice to see from the outside but not worth going in.

The castle is very interesting and you can explore the interior for free. You have to pay for the state rooms and armoury, but they’re not expensive. If you’re in Krakow you should spend an afternoon here

We enjoyed our tour of the castle, the state rooms I found a little disappointing having visited state rooms in other countries , Krakow seemed sadly the poor relative. However this is part of Polands history and it was interesting to learn about it.

What a fantastic tour this was, I opted to hire the headphones and it was well worth the money the castle and museum Katedralne was amazing , it’s a steep old climb to the top of the bell tower, but you get a fantastic view across the city also bear in mind the Archidiecejalne museum is only open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, I booked my castle tour on the Monday but I was able to use my museum ticket on one of these days , the tombs in the crypt was surreal so much information in one place

Although my tour and guide included many other leaders of Poland, I would like to make a couple of comments about 2 of them.
Casimir the Great:
Founded the University and stressed education.
He was a Warrior and more importantly a diplomat.
He Welcomed Jews to Poland as a safe haven.
Jadwiga and Jagiello:
They Defeated the Teutonic Knights. The Teutonic Knights started as a noble endeavor converting Pagans to Christianity and ended up using force to do so and over taxed of the people.

Grazie, Francesco

Hi there
My boyfriend and I have krakow booked for next week 18-22 March. We are supposed to be travelling from Dublin.
We are not sure whether to continue with the trip, or cancel it due to corona virus. Are most tourist places still open? I’m aware museums are starting to close etc. Just wondering if it will be worth it for us to go as we wanted to visit Auschwitz etc.
We were planning to fly out of Warsaw and get the train from krakow to Warsaw.
If anyone could provide us with some information that would be great

It’s not a steep walk, there is different entrances to the castle both have an incline but not steep, a gentle stroll should be sufficient to reach the castle grounds.

Niekoniecznie jest to przechowalnia bagażu. Zostawia się tam plecaki torebki takie większe z którymi wejście mogłoby grozić uszkodzeniem eksponatów. Nie widziałam tam dużych walizek raczej plecaki, większe torebki, płaszcze parasole. Przechowalnia była bezpłatna.

There can be queues, but then everyone stops at the first booth they see at the top of the hill on the way in - there are others which should be quieter.
