About
The Rynek Underground exhibition presents not only Krakow’s rich history, but also the connections between the city and mediaeval Europe’s chief centres of trade and culture. Moreover, it portrays the significance of the capital of Poland in the operation of the Hanseatic League. The real historical objects on display, just to mention 14th-century coins, decorations, and pottery, are proof of the European cultural and trade exchange that continued here incessantly for hundreds of years. The tourist route under the Main Market Square leads between the stone and brick walls of the cellars of former trading sites, including the Kramy Bolesławowe Stalls, Kramy Bogate Stalls, the Great Scales, and the Cloth Hall. Opening hours: Winter season (November – March) Monday, Wednesday - Sunday 10.00-20.00 Tuesday 10.00-16.00 Summer season (April – October) Monday 10.00-20.00 Wednesday - Sunday 10.00-22.00 Tuesday 10.00-16.00 Exhibition is closed on every second Monday of the month.

This is at a far end of the Cloth Hall and as you might expect it is an underground museum. When you are down there you see the different levels of the ages of the city and the way one era has been built on top of the other.

Worth a visit and unless you read everything will be no more than an hour.

Creatively and (generally) well presented using a good mix of video, interactive screens, info boards and exhibits. It’ll keep your attention all the way round. A must for history fans, especially medieval. Fascinating insight with “ in situ” archaeology. We spent 2 hours at a relaxed pace: could easily take over 3 hours if you read everything. Plenty to see. Arrived at opening time and bought tickets for immediate entry. Not sure if this is always possible.
One star reluctantly deducted because some info boards are very difficult to read in the low light and there is no English language version of the excellent looking guide book.
Well worth visiting at any time, not just on a rainy day.

The museum was interesting but a lot of the exhibits are just the same thing over and over with no story tying it together as you move through the exhibit.
It could do with an audio guide. The information screens were ok.

Also try to avoid going at times where there are lots of groups on guided tours - the tour guides have no qualms about standing right in front of you and delivering their speech in whatever language when you are looking at one of the displays.

We stayed from 23 to 27 December. A very beautiful city, I would say more than beautiful, a place that deserves to be visited. It also snowed during the days we were there, and this gave Krakow a very beautiful, evocative appearance, just as we imagined it. In short, everything is beautiful, or almost. Just one discordant note which, at least for us, represented a problem. Almost everything was closed on the 24th, 25th and 26th, the few open restaurants were inaccessible as they had already been booked since November, and this is, in my opinion, a figure that does not restore the value that Krakow deserves, taking into account the tourist influx of which he boasted in those days. And again, the shops... closed on the 24th. This doesn't make sense. So, to conclude, I would go back, but not at Christmas.

Very beautiful and fairytale city. We went on Christmas, unfortunately everything was closed for three days and there were too many people everywhere. The shops had queues and you wait a long time everywhere. The food was good and the coffee not everywhere though. Personally the horses they have for you to ride are beautiful but they are outside all day from morning to night in the rain and cold so we did not prefer this ride which they charge over €80. Visiting Auschwitz is definitely a terrible experience, the best of Krakow for us.

Quite literally the worst experience I’ve ever paid for.
Save your time and money and do something useful instead.
I’m convinced that they keep it so dark inside to prevent you from realising just how dreadful the experience would be if they had the lights on.
Even if you find an object of interest, it’s so dark you can’t read the associated information boards. Had to use the torch on my phone for the few items of interest.
Basically your looking at old foundations, most of which aren’t even original and a few relics thrown in to try to make something of the place.
Wouldn’t give it the time of day. Felt completely ripped off.

Very disappointing. A somewhat haphazard arrangement of artefacts and art over three levels although there’s no chronological descriptions to orient the visitor or indication of the historical significance of the exhibits. Whilst the museum has other centres describing life in Krakow during the wars it completely ignores the role of the town and townsfolk during the Jewish roundups and deportations. Much more needed on this period.

Over policing with security staff in every room who follow you around making the visitor feel very uncomfortable.

With a little effort the museum could be much more user friendly and informative for visitors.

That was an exellent interactive museum experience. The staff was friendly enough to show you the right direction, as there was quite an amount to see, to touch, to try, from the ancient times till the modern. You can not only watch a lot and read a lot about the history, but also you can measure your hight and weight in the medieval units, that was fun.
Please note that the tickets office is located on the opposite side of the buildings block and is closed earlier that the museum itself. We failed to get in for the first day, and succeed from the second try.

I really, really enjoyed this museum. If it wasn’t because the low lighting makes it hard to read the signs sometimes, I would’ve given it 5 stars. It’s super informative, both for adults and kids, with exhibits and displays throughout, photographs of the archeological process, and a lot of videos to explore at the end.

I gave myself too little time to see the whole place which turned out to be much larger than expected. I think 2-3 hours would be the right amount of time to see most of the museum.

Mostly archeological and average museum. Definitely is not for teens. Pretty boring and very dark. We took family ticket for 72 zloty and after 1.5 hours we were outside. If you are visiting Salt Mines and Krakow Ethnographic Museum, you can pass on this one
