Overview
More
Established by the Nazis in 1940, Auschwitz-Birkenau has become a symbol of terror, genocide and the Holocaust. Although the exact number of victims is unknown, many Jews, Poles and gypsies died here. The museum consists of two parts: Auschwitz I, the first and oldest camp (the number of prisoners fluctuated around 15,000, sometimes rising above 20,000) and Auschwitz II, Birkenau (which held more than 90,000 prisoners in 1944). The greater part of the apparatus of mass extermination was built in Birkenau and the majority of the victims were murdered there.

Be prepared for an emotional day and I suggest doing something fun afterwards to lighten the mood. For me, seeing tens of thousands of children's shoes in one room or 7000kg of hair was the hardest. Great awareness...

We did the full tour of both museums with a tour guide. You see lots here and you can get to understand the enormity of the horrors here when you see it for yourself. Tours are all timed so they don't clash . You get...More

I expected it to be a harrowing experience and took some steps to make it easier. We pre-booked a tour (with Turpol) and were picked up at our hotel. We also opted not to make any more plans for the remainder of the day. I...More

First, if you go in peak season, be sure to get your tickets in advance, or you'll be standing in long lines to buy tickets, then wait until your tour time - which could be a while. The tour was organized very well with headphones...More

Our family (incl 11 and 13 year old) all agreed this is an absolute must see for anyone who has an opportunity to go. To educate our children, and to enhance our own understanding of these atrocities makes the trip a simple decision to include...More

Auschwitz-Birkenau. Harrowing especially if you are a student of WWII history as I've been all my life. Birkenau is where the majority of murders took place but the place to start is Auschwitz 1. The old camp blocks have been converted into museums bearing photographs...More

This is very good place to see. It's good for everyone to see because there you can see how cruel human being can be. It makes you think what there was in 1940.

It was 30 degrees last week when we were there, sure a skirt is ok, and a top of some sort, didn't look as if there was a dress code, but nothing outrageous.
